MRKT, the second phase of the Revitalization of Alexandra Park in Downtown Toronto has recently topped off construction at 15 floors! The project is a two-tower mixed-use building which integrates market and community housing through the creation of shared programmatic elements: a community garden, a shared courtyard and fenced playground, an outdoor daycare play space, amenity terraces, and a public realm network that wraps around the building promoting community interaction, health, and wellness. Landscape construction is ongoing and targeted for completion in summer 2025. The project promotes a vibrant pedestrian-oriented neighbourhood that is equitable and livable. JRS has been involved since 2013 in the multi-phase, master-planned community by Tridel in strategic partnership with Toronto Community Housing. #tbt to the Student Life Centre Expansion project for the University of Waterloo! ✨ This project aimed to develop a 5,700-m² (21,000-ft²) building that connected the existing Student Life Centre and Physical Activities Complex, creating a unified Student Life facility. 👌 This expansion included features such as a climbing wall, studio space, dining areas, study zones, social and multi-faith spaces, a Graduate Student Association lounge, and a link to the Math and Computers building, among others. MTE was responsible for the civil engineering design, which included site grading, servicing, stormwater management, and the inspection of civil works during construction. The MTE team collaborated closely with CS&P Architects and other consultants to ensure seamless coordination throughout the design process. This collaborative effort was essential for obtaining necessary approvals and ultimately delivering a well-designed facility. West Niagara Secondary School is a brand new 3-storey secondary school in Beamsville, designed for 1,500 students brought together from three local high schools. Set on a former agricultural site, the design features two volumes connected by a central atrium, navigating the site’s slope. Students have access to state-of-the-art technology labs, double gymnasiums, and a stunning 750-seat theatre, all shaped through extensive collaboration with DSBN educators and the surrounding community. Designing educational spaces in Ontario for more than 60 years has allowed us to observe the changing nature of these spaces demand more than just traditional classrooms—they seek advanced technical resources, collaborative spaces, and a higher standard of design that reflects their innovative spirit. This school embraces that vision! With thoughtful site planning, the design of WNSS thoughtfully enables safe access for buses and parents, ample outdoor gathering spaces, and a running track. Construction at MRKT Alexandra Park is progressing well! Structural forming and "top off" were completed at the end of June. The precast façade is set to finish by the end of August, with windows being installed on Level 12. Inside, drywall framing is advancing on Level 4, and mechanical and electrical rough-ins are underway on Level 3. The recently renovated Burnhamthorpe Community Centre is highlighted in the September issue of Award Magazine, where Susan Spencer Lewin and Saeed M. Sadeghi delve into the challenges and benefits of retaining the existing facility from both community and design perspectives.
