  • Tell me More… – Environment and Climate Change Canada Diverting organic waste away from landfills and processing it at composting or anaerobic digestion facilities avoids the generation of landfill methane and extends the lifespan of the landfill. Composting includes everything from backyard composters to large facilities that turn food waste, yard and garden waste and other organic wastes into compost that can be used as a soil amendment. Anaerobic digestion is an industrial process that is used to convert food and other organic waste into biogas (a methane-rich gaseous mixture that can replace the use of fossil fuels and fossil-based energy) and a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Find out more about these organic waste management technologies through the Technical Document on Municipal Solid Waste Organics Processing. Of course, reducing the amount of food waste created in the first place makes the most of the energy and resources that go into growing and producing food, reduces the amount of waste that needs to be managed, and reduces landfill methane emissions. • A Degree of Concern: Why Global Temperatures Matter We hear about green house gases (GHG) and global warming daily. We hear that we have to stop the rise in temperature. Therefore reducing the amount of methane and carbon that are released into the atmosphere matters. That is what Davidson Environmental aims to help you do. While we all do the work of reducing emissions, here is a little information and some further motivation stick to the task. The source for what follows in NASA..... Temperature plays a critical role in biology. We all know the average temperature of a healthy adult human is about 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). You don’t have to ask anyone running a fever of 38.3 degrees Celsius (101 degrees Fahrenheit) if a couple of degrees matters. Our bodies are optimized to run at a certain temperature. According to most studies, humans feel most comfortable, are most productive and function best when the ambient temperature around us is roughly 22 degrees Celsius (71.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Vary that temperature by more than a few degrees in either direction and we seek to warm or cool ourselves if we can. Our bodies also make adjustments, such as sweating. When ambient temperatures become too extreme, the impacts on human health can be profound, even deadly. Plants and other animals have it tougher. While they also adjust to their external temperature environment through various mechanisms, they can’t just turn on an air conditioner or furnace like we can, and they may not be able to migrate. They survive within specific, defined habitats. Flowers wilting in the summer heat. While individual plants can’t just move themselves if temperatures get too hot, plant species can migrate by spreading their seeds to more favorable growing locations. Some plants are unable to quickly relocate. For all living organisms, the faster climate changes, the more difficult it is to adapt to it. When climate change is too rapid, it can lead to species extinction. As greenhouse gas concentrations continue to increase, the cumulative impact will be to accelerate temperature change. Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius decreases the risks of long-lasting or irreversible changes, such as the loss of certain ecosystems, and allows people and ecosystems to better adapt. Have You Seen Us? No, this isn’t the Where’s Waldo challenge, but we are curious.  Our trucks are driving billboards for our environmental services.  We have 20 trucks travel the roads of South and South Western Ontario daily.  We travel from Niagara to Owen Sound and Mississauga to Windsor. Our drivers are on the road from 4:30 am to 2:00 am picking up commercial and industrial food waste so that we can process it and ship the resulting “clean” product to biofuel plants. We are inspired by the work we do. Knowing that we are diverting 900 tons of food waste out of landfills every month and creating a reduction of GHG emissions by 241 tons a month keeps us on the road and growing our business daily.  We would love to see your response, have you seen us on the roads. Drop us a note and let us know – we would love to hear from you.  #FoodWaste #EnvironmentalServices #Biofuel #DivertFromLandfill #Landfill #ghgemissions

EXPERIENCE ECOLOGICAL EDUCATION For many, environmental education and activism is a redundant message, an annoyance, and the impetus for mushy paper straws in our drinks—a shrug-off. For others, the future of our environment is a reality that must be screamed, something that can no longer come in the form of a nudge or polite reminder. In the middle ground between this disparity lies Arcadia Earth: both a vessel for passionate environmental education and a delicate and enchanting exhibit that welcomes you as the change-maker, not the villain. The attached article give an overview of this great experiential learning opportunity at Arcadia Earth. NET-ZERO - OUR PART Recently, I had the opportunity to take part in the Niagara Region Waste Survey. Like many places around the world, Niagara is working toward the ambitious goal of reducing its carbon footprint to net-zero by 2050. The Region is seeking community input on how to get there, exploring ideas like education, improved collection methods, and anaerobic digestion plants. I applaud their efforts because, let’s face it, this is a monumental task that will take a serious investment to realize. Achieving net-zero means balancing the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) produced with the amount removed from the atmosphere. It’s a massive challenge, but one that can be met with collaboration. The World Resources Institute notes that reaching net-zero requires a complete transformation—from how we power our economies to how we transport people and goods. While governments and corporations play a big role, we all have a part to play. Small changes like fuel switching, diverting food waste, and even planting trees can help. At Davidson Environmental, we’re passionate about supporting food waste diversion and turning methane into biofuel. Let us partner with your business to take this important step. Together, we can make a meaningful impact—because every step counts. #NetZero2050 #ClimateAction #ReduceYourFootprint #Sustainability #FoodWasteDiversion #GreenChoices #Biofuel #MethaneReduction #GHGEmissions #EcoFriendly #SmallChangesBigImpact

THE DIRTY DOZEN We've talked about food waste and inefficient landfill use before, but what about the other litter that harms our environment? It's surprising to see so much trash along highways, parks, and beaches when disposal bins are everywhere. Last year the  International Coastal Clean-up Day in Ontario collected: 164,995 Cigarette Butts             87,470 Pieces of Plastic 49,548 Food Wrappers               45,747 Styrofoam Pieces 36,317 Pieces of Paper               28,506 Bottle Caps 17,686 Beverage Cans                15,166 Pieces of Soft Plastic 13,888 Plastic Bottles                 13,313 Plastic Bags 11,310 Coffee Cups & Lids        9,171 Straws You can do something about littering and poor landfill use because better tomorrow starts today. International Coastal Cleanup Day will be September 21, 2024 - 9:30 am – 3:00 pm .  Organized collection is occurring near you, or find out what it takes to get a group going in your area at (https://lnkd.in/gYZmjSDF).    Those who are interested in reducing methane producing garbage being put in landfills can be a part of a cleaner future by contacting Davidson Environmental for a quote or information about their services which divert wasted food from landfills and into biofuel plants. #cleanerfuture #nolandfills #environmentalcleanup #divertwaste #cleanwater

A GREENER FUTURE Methane, is a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide that traps heat and contributes significantly to global warming. Around 60% of methane emissions result from human activities such as agriculture, fossil fuel use, and decomposing organic waste in landfills. Despite its impact, landfill emissions have received less attention compared to other methane sources. Even with reduced fossil fuel use in the future, managing organic waste will remain an ongoing challenge. The time to act to change our future is now. Our Canadian government is committed to improving landfill waste management by funding innovative methods to capture methane and support a circular economy. In a circular economy, products are repurposed, reused, or reimagined to avoid landfills altogether. At Davidson Environmental, we’re proud to be part of this movement. By diverting food waste and helping turn commercial waste into renewable energy, we partner with businesses to make a positive impact and help build a cleaner, greener future. Building a better tomorrow starts with taking a positive step today. Let Davidson Environmental support your green journey with our food diversion program. THE POWER OF A QUESTION: INSPIRING ACTION The power of a timely question can change your trajectory. In the 1990s, Ray Anderson, founder of Interface Inc. (carpet and tile), experienced a "lightning bolt" moment. When asked, "What's your company doing for the environment?" he realized he had no answer. Anderson then did some research and formed a company-wide task force dedicated to creating environmental responsibility. Since then, Interface Inc. has transformed its operations in the following ways: o 79% of energy used at owned facilities is renewable, o 96% reduction of GHG emissions at manufacturing sites, o 51% of the material in products is recycled or bio-based, o 86% reduction of water consumption in manufacturing facilities, o and 81% less waste is sent to landfills. These are truly impressive actions in an industry that is otherwise known to be environmentally damaging. Anderson's story reminds us that it often takes one moment of realization to ignite lasting change. Let's be inspired and ask ourselves: "What are we doing for the environment?" and then take steps towards building a sustainable future. Your steps may be bold and transformative or small yet impactful, not matter the size of the step, any movement towards sustainability matters. Davidson Environmental is dedicated to helping businesses improve their environmental footprint. Our services help you by reducing your landfill use and diverting your organic matter to biofuel plants. Let us help you achieve your environmental goals.
