"Increased expression of proton pump and allergic inflammation genes predicts PPI failure in pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis" In this study, PPI-NR EoE had significantly higher baseline gene expression of mast cell, cytokine, proton pump, and eosinophil genes compared to PPI-R EoE. PPIs may be involved in an inflammatory cascade of mast cell activation that stimulates IL-13 release, which upregulates ATP12A and ATP4A that leads to eosinophil recruitment. https://lnkd.in/e7xtRsc2 #EoE #Esophagus

We are glad to announce that our manuscript on patient satisfaction with an Enhanced Recovery Protocol for esophagectomy has been published in Diseases of the Esophagus. (https://lnkd.in/e9BmU257) In this research, we looked at patient satisfaction in a large (over 300 patients) cohort who underwent one of the most complex and invasive surgical procedures: esophagectomy for cancer. This procedure is known to have an important impact on postoperative quality of life. At the start of our Enhanced Recovery Protocol, back in 2017, we decided to implement a quality control instrument in the form of a questionnaire, to follow up on patient's in-hospital experiences with ERP. We found high satisfaction rates in the information given as well as in the care provided by all involved professionals. Most patients are also quite happy with their length of hospital stay (LOS) after this major surgical intervention. This is an important finding because this LOS is significantly shortened with a median of 3 days compared to the era before our Enhanced Recovery Protocol was in place (median LOS for all patients dropped from 13 days to currently 10 days). I want to express my gratitude to all who helped to achieve these results, especially my colleague nurses from HOS12 – thoracic surgery UZ Leuven. Furthermore, my special thanks Hanne Declerck, for her help in data collection and interpretation of the qualitative data. Finally, I want to thank prof. Theo van Achterberg for his continuous support and help in writing this manuscript.
