January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month! Alzheimer's and other dementia diseases not only affect those who have it but their loved ones, caregivers and the community as a whole. It is important to be educated on this issue that affects so many of us, you can visit Alzheimer's Society for more information of maintaining brain health, reducing the risk of dementia and what to do if you have dementia. Here at Drive Happiness we do our best to raise awareness about Alzheimer's and reduce the stigma that affects seniors, by supporting them through their daily activities with our services. We also provide an online dementia training course for all of our volunteer drivers. This online program is provided by the Alzheimer's Society and it enhances our ability to serve those living with dementia, by educating our drivers allowing them to provide safe and comfortable rides for our clients. You will get the opportunity to meet many friendly seniors and get to know them as you drive them to their medical appointments, grocery store or hair salon. As a volunteer you are in charge of making your own schedule so you get to select when and where you would like to drive as well as getting a small reimbursement for gas and vehicle wear and tear. Today we are celebrating International Volunteer Day! Drive Happiness would not be as successful in carrying out its mission of serving seniors across the province without the help of all of our wonderful volunteers. They graciously spend their time and utilize their own vehicles in order to get our seniors the places they need to go, often going above and beyond forming relationships with the clients and building a sense of community.
