Conserving Canadian wetlands and other natural spaces for waterfowl, wildlife, and people for more than 80 years

About us

Wetlands are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. Unfortunately, up to 70 per cent of wetlands have been lost in settled areas of Canada. More are lost every day. Wetlands do many important jobs for us. They help clean our water. They are home to hundreds of species of wildlife. They protect our communities from flooding and droughts. They store carbon, helping in the fight against climate change. Since 1938, we have been working hard to save Canada’s wetlands. Backed by sound science, we have what it takes to make a real difference. It’s why we’re leading the way in wetland conservation. We know what needs to be done. We know how to do it. Now, more than ever, we need your help.

  • Like it or not, winter is here! ❄️☃️ Across the country, one way we adjust is by making the switch to winter tires so our vehicles can handle ice and snow on the roads. But what about ducks that stick around during the snowy months? 🦆 How do they adjust to the cold? In a way, they change their tires too. • Globally, 40% of species rely on wetlands—and did you know that estimates put 25% of the world’s remaining marshes, bogs, swamps and other carbon-rich water bodies inside Canada’s borders? Our understanding of wetlands is growing, but they continue to decrease. In developed areas of Canada, up to 70% of our wetlands have been destroyed or degraded. As Canada's wetlands continue to disappear, so too do the many benefits they provide—like protecting our communities from flooding, drought and climate change, and providing habitat for more than 550 wildlife species. If you think future generations deserve clean water, climate resilience and healthy wildlife populations, now is the time to help save wetlands. • ❄️ For so many of us, growing up playing shinny on frozen ponds isn’t just a memory—it’s a cherished part of our identity. Like Heidi B., who shares their story: "The wetlands fostered my love of hockey in the most natural and magical way. Growing up, they were our winter playground, where frozen lakes and ponds became our rinks, and cattails swayed like cheering fans in the breeze. It was on that windblown, uneven ice where I first learned to skate; shoveling rinks and chasing pucks and dreams under open skies. The wetlands taught me resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to the outdoors—qualities that mirror the spirit of hockey itself. They weren’t just a place to play; they were where I fell in love with the simplicity and freedom of the game." 🏒⛸️ This story was made possible by the natural rinks that exist thanks to #HealthyWetlands. 🌱 Your #SmallPondsBigGoals story could be featured next—share it with us at ducks.ca/hockey! #WetlandsForTheWin #WinterTraditions #HockeyMemories

  • #ICYMI: DUC research scientist Pascal Badiou joins host Glen Kirby on the Protect and Profit: Farming for the Future podcast. 🎙️ Despite the science showing that sloughs and marshes can provide many benefits, they continue to be lost to drainage. Fortunately, in many cases, a wetland can be restored to its previous function simply by plugging the drain. In this episode, hear from a Manitoba farmer about why he restored 70 acres of wetlands, and learn the science behind the on-farm and environmental benefits. • As we reflect on Ducks Unlimited Canada's 2024 accomplishments, we celebrate the power of collaboration, especially our partnerships with Indigenous Peoples. For thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples have been the stewards of the lands and waters of what is now Canada. Today, across the country, Indigenous Peoples are leading some of the most important and significant nature conservation initiatives ever. DUC is honoured to be a partner in some of these efforts and to support Indigenous Peoples as they realize their conservation vision. From contributions of technical support to facilitating Indigenous stewardship and cultural experiences on the land, DUC strives to provide resources and capacity that can enable Indigenous people and communities to achieve their conservation goals. We have much to learn and we are committed to working closely with Indigenous partners in the spirit of collaboration and reconciliation. Together, we will foster a future where Indigenous-led conservation efforts continue to safeguard critical ecosystems for generations to come. 🌱🌎 Learn more: https://loom.ly/D_DrvFA #FocusedOnTheFuture #EnvironmentalStewardship #IndigenousLedConservation

  • At Ducks Unlimited Canada, we are #FocusedOnTheFuture—which includes using credible, results-oriented research to help guide, evaluate and adapt our decisions to apply the right conservation programs to the right places. 🌱 Since 1991, through our Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research (IWWR), we have helped uncover critical connections between wetlands, waterfowl, watersheds, biodiversity, species at risk, and more. This year, we're proud to celebrate two major IWWR milestones: 1️⃣ The release of IWWR’s 800th scientific publication! 2️⃣ The launch of the Prairie Biodiversity Mapping and Assessment Tool—which offers detailed insights and predictions to help land managers, conservationists and industry make informed decisions that promote biodiversity. This groundbreaking work marks a significant milestone in DUC’s commitment to safeguarding Canada’s rich natural heritage for generations to come. 🌎 Learn more about our 2024 achievements: https://loom.ly/D_DrvFA #WetlandConservation #Biodiversity #NatureBasedSolutions #YearInReview
