Although icicles hanging from your roof may look like a winter wonderland❄️, they can wreak havoc on your roof and your home. 🏠 An ice dam refers to a build-up of ice along the edge of sloped roofs. Sloped roof attics are designed to be cold and well-vented. Ice damming is evidence that your attic is too warm. A warm attic melts the snow on the roof. As the meltwater travels towards the edge of the roof it freezes where the roof is no longer heated. Continual melting and freezing causes layers of ice to build up, which creates an “ice dam.”🧊 The meltwater can then become trapped behind the dam where it backs up under the shingles where it can leak into the unit. Main Causes of Ice Damming: ▪️ Inadequate Insulation: Heat loss through the ceiling warms the attic and melts the snow. ▪️ Poor Ventilation: Warm air is trapped in the attic causing snowmelt. ▪️ Air Leakage: Warm air leaks directly into the attic, particularly around penetrations such as electrical boxes, exhaust pipes, and transitions at walls. We teamed up with Furniture Bank, assembling 15 pieces of furniture to help transform empty spaces into warm, welcoming homes for families. But our efforts didn’t stop there—our team also lent a hand with Habitat for Humanity Canada, tackling interior finishes like demolition, trim, flooring, painting, and cabinetry to support affordable housing efforts. Together, we work to create spaces that offer comfort and stability for families striving for a better future. By supporting initiatives that connect communities, provide access to critical resources, and inspire the next generation of problem-solvers, we witness the true power of engineering in action. 🌍 🌉 One standout initiative we proudly sponsored was the Elubaneni footbridge in Eswatini. Designed and constructed by Western University Engineering students apart of Engineers in Action, this 83-meter footbridge spans the Phongolane River—an area prone to flooding. The bridge now provides safe, year-round access to essential services, including schools, healthcare, and jobs, for over 7,000 people. This project highlights the transformative potential of engineering—allowing students to apply their skills to a real-world challenge while empowering a community with vital resources. We’re honored to have been part of an initiative that creates lasting impact and demonstrates what’s possible when collaboration, ingenuity, and purpose-driven work come together.✨ #EngineeringInAction

35 Years Later: Remembering the Polytechnique Tragedy 💔 On December 6, 1989, 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique in Montreal—targeted simply because they were women pursuing engineering. ✨ Their dreams and futures were stolen, but their legacy lives on. 👩🔧 Let’s honor their memory by: 🔧 Fighting for gender equity. 📣 Speaking out against violence. 💡 Supporting women in STEM and beyond. Tony brings more than 25 years of expertise in consulting engineering, with a proven track record for delivering innovative solutions for building services in commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential buildings. His extensive experience includes managing a wide variety of projects, such as: • Cooling and heating plant retrofits • Condensate heat recovery systems • Decarbonization-focused feasibility studies • BAS upgrades and modernization • Energy saving retrofits • HVAC system upgrades and refurbishments   With construction values ranging from $50,000 to $15 million, Tony’s technical expertise and leadership have delivered successful projects that prioritize efficiency, sustainability, practicality and technical soundness. Tony joins Edison from WSP, where he managed a team in the building services sector, leading complex mechanical and electrical projects. His focus on retrofit solutions aligns perfectly with Edison’s mission to deliver sustainable and innovative engineering for existing buildings. Based out of our Markham office, Tony will enhance our mechanical and electrical capabilities, enabling us to take on an even broader range of impactful projects. Beyond her technical contributions, Marielle has been a driving force in fostering team cohesion across all offices. Her infectious optimism and passion for life have elevated our team events and brought an energetic spirit to every initiative she takes on.
