In 1946, Viola Desmond, a Black woman from Nova Scotia, made a simple but powerful choice: she refused to move from the whites-only section of a movie theatre. For that, she was arrested, jailed overnight and fined. The official charge was a one-cent tax difference on her ticket, but the real reason was racial discrimination. Viola’s stand against segregation helped spark Canada’s civil rights movement. Decades later, she became the first person in Canada to receive a free pardon, officially recognizing the injustice she endured. Today, her face is on the Canadian $10 bill - a tribute to her impact and a reminder of the fight for equality. At E Fry Ottawa, we support criminalized women and gender-diverse people through a feminist, intersectional lens, by providing needed services and supports to some of the most marginalized members of our community who, in many cases, would not be served elsewhere. Like Viola, they deserve fairness, dignity and the opportunity to move forward. #BlackHistoryMonth #ViolaDesmond #EFryOttawa

About us
We advocate for and support women and gender-diverse people in Ottawa who have been or may become criminalized. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa is the only organization in Ottawa providing a feminist, intersectional lens on criminalized women and gender-diverse people. We provide needed services and supports to some of the most marginalized members of our community who, in many cases, would not be served elsewhere. We envision an inclusive and just community without prisons, in which all women and gender-diverse people live with equality and dignity.

Direct mail fundraising appeals remain one of the primary fundraising methods for critical annual donations. The giving season is the most important fundraising period in the sector, with a significant proportion of annual revenues for many organizations, including E Fry Ottawa, being contributed during the last six weeks of the year. Unfortunately, the Canada Post strike has hampered the ability of charities to receive donations. While postal services have resumed, the impacts of the strike will continue into 2025. The timing of this fundraising challenge is not good. Faced with rising inflation and labour and volunteer shortages, nonprofits have been dealing with the increased costs of delivering services and paying competitive wages. To mitigate delays caused by the postal disruption, Imagine Canada calls on the Federal government to extend the deadline for eligible charitable donations into the new year, so that donors can receive tax receipts for the 2024 tax year even if donations are received and processed in early 2025. Please fill out the form here: https://lnkd.in/g5d9Gpim , and click "Add your Voice". A letter will be sent to your MP, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc and the Minister of National Revenue Marie-Claude Bibeau. Taking action only takes a minute and could have lasting and meaningful impact for charities in your community!
