  • NEW: Canada ZEV adoption rate hit 18.9 per cent in Q4 2024: S&P — The latest data also shows national ZEV adoption in Canada slightly exceeded S&P’s earlier prediction for 2024. ⚡️⚡️⚡️ Zero-emission vehicle adoption finished on a high last year with S&P Global Mobility reporting registrations of new battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles reaching 18.9 per cent in Q4 2024. “ZEVs accounted for approximately one out of every five vehicles sold in Canada during Q4,” reads the S&P report. “In Quebec, the ZEV penetration rate soared to 42.0 per cent, with the province now accounting for 60.0 per cent of ZEV registrations nationwide.” In November 2024, S&P Global predicted Canada would reach an overall 15.2 per cent ZEV adoption rate for the year. That estimate was slightly exceeded. Now that the numbers are in, the overall adoption rate for 2024 in Canada is 15.4 per cent. (Note: S&P Global Mobility, like Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada, classifies BEVs and PHEVs as “zero-emission vehicles.” The grouping does not reflect Electric Autonomy’s view, which considers only non-combustion engine vehicles to be zero-emission. However, where statistics in this report refer to ZEVs, we have adhered to the S&P Global Mobility definition for consistency.) Looking only at battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), Canada’s adoption rate hit 14.3 per cent in Q4 2024 versus 12.2 per cent in Q3. For plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the Q4 2024 adoption rate is 4.6 per cent, up from 4.3 per cent in Q3 2024. Overall, states the report, ZEV volume in Canada increased by 44.2 per cent, while total light-duty vehicle sales volume increased by just 9.5 per cent. • Did you miss "The Automotive Outlook: Forecast, Disruption & Industry Transition", Joe McCabe's excellent presentation at the recent EV Innovation & Technology Conference? Or do you wish you could get another look at his insight-packed slide deck? Good news: you can (re)watch Joe's entire session, slides & all, via the Electric Autonomy YouTube channel. As President & CEO at AutoForecast Solutions LLC, Joe provided a very valuable, up to date overview of current global and North American vehicle outlooks, manufacturing plans, opportunities, risks, and strategies going forward. He talked about new market entrants, consumer sentiment, and geopolitical pressures that are driving critical business decisions. And he addressed key issues such as production locations, powertrain portfolio mix, tariffs, supply chain viability, and shareholder value. • Canada’s automotive sector has entered a time of unprecedented volatility and the end is not in sight. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico, including those from the automotive industry (except critical minerals, which may be subjected to a 10 per cent tariff) dominated discussions at Electric Autonomy's third annual EV Innovation & Technology Conference. The event, held at York University in Toronto before an audience of over 250 attendees, took place days after the U.S., Canada and Mexico reached a 30-day truce in the impending trade war. As the industry confronts the possibility of onerous tariffs, speakers dug deep in search of opportunities. Distilling the panels and presentations throws three key takeaways into sharp relief: • Canada must bolster its ability to compete through greater investment in the supply chain; • Suppliers and automakers need to diversify their customer base to ensure their businesses are sustainable; and • Governments and private capital should ramp up investment in R&D while upskilling the work force to handle more sophisticated technology on the factory floor. “I am convinced,” said panelist Caroline Olsen, research and development director for SGS Canada, “that in 10 years, Canada will have created inter-provincial hubs where we will collaborate on innovations and will connect all the elements in the supply chain.” What follows is a summary of the perspectives and predictions from each facet of Canada’s EV and battery supply chain. • Charging network operator, JOLT, is expanding in Canada following the announcement of a $194 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank/ Banque de l'infrastructure du Canada. The Australian-headquartered company will use the funds to install up to 1,500 curbside EV chargers in urban centres across Canada. “Curbside fast charging is critical to the transition to electric vehicles, and providing fast, free charging to those who do not have access to off street charging is JOLT’s goal for its expansion in Canada,” said Jolt CEO, Doug McNamee, in a press release. In addition, Jolt says each of its chargers will offer 7 kWh (equivalent to 50km of range) of free charging per vehicle, per day. Jolt estimates this could equate to $1,100 in savings for EV drivers every year. Jolt in Canada Currently Jolt has two charging stations in operation in Canada with speeds ranging from 25 kW to 50 kW. Both are located in the Greater Toronto Area and opened in September 2024. But the company has been pledging to expand to 5,000 chargers across Canada (harnessing its partnership with Telus to do so). What sets Jolt apart from other networks is that its chargers provide two income streams: charging and advertising. “We were really impressed by Jolt’s capabilities and the existing charging network they have globally. We thought they had a really interesting business model and platform where they integrate digital out-of-home advertising with EV charging,” says Melissa Chow, director of investments at the CIB. “This really allows them to provide affordable charging to citizens and Canadians living in urban areas.” Chow says the CIB views Jolt as an important part of the solution for urban charging access — particularly for those who live in multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs). • NEW: Atlantic Canada left without a roadmap as school bus electrification study remains unreleased — The delay is frustrating a transition to safe, clean zero-emission transportation for children, says Abbygail Lefebvre at the Ecology Action Centre. ⚡️⚡️⚡️ On February 23, 2024, the government of Canada announced it would conduct a feasibility study on electric school buses for Atlantic Canada. This study is led by the Nova Scotia Department of Education in collaboration with Council of Atlantic Minsters of Education and Training (CAMET). It is intended to equip the governments of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick with information about transitioning school bus fleets to cleaner, more sustainable options — a key step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering healthier communities. However, one year later, CAMET has yet to release the results of the study, leaving decisions on regional school bus electrification in limbo.
