Farmers and Ontarians at large are asking for more access to affordable and reliable energy, and #Enbridge is committed to meeting that demand, Mike Gladstone, Vice-President of Utility Public Affairs and Communications at Enbridge, said at the Ontario Federation of Agriculture’s annual general meeting on Wednesday.
The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) annual meeting is a three-day event that brings together farmers, industry leaders, and policymakers to address key issues shaping Ontario’s agricultural sector.
“Here in Ontario, Enbridge Gas serves nearly four million customers, providing affordable and reliable energy to homes, businesses, and industries. Farmers, in particular, depend on natural gas for drying grain, heating greenhouses, and powering operations that are the backbone of rural economies,” Gladstone said during a panel discussion entitled “Powering Agriculture: The Critical Role of Energy Affordability on the Farm.”
#NaturalGas is essential, Gladstone said, because it provides twice the energy demand of Ontario’s electricity system and delivers four times the peak electricity capacity at just a quarter of the cost, making natural gas a cornerstone of affordability.
Gladstone reminded those in attendance that #EnbridgeGas is just one part of a much larger company. Enbridge Inc. is North America’s leading energy delivery company, fueling economies and enhancing people’s quality of life.
For example, Enbridge’s Line 5 is critical to supplying Ontario with #Energy used in the production of fertilizers and propane, critical to fuel grain drying, power irrigation systems, and for HVAC systems to maintain perishable crops and livestock facilities, including barns and brooding pens.
The criticality of the gas distribution system is growing, especially in rural communities.
In 2023 alone, Enbridge Gas connected over 50,000 new homes and businesses to our system, and every day we receive new requests from across the province.
Beyond delivering the energy needs of today, Enbridge is also investing in the future of rural Ontario.
Southwest Ontario is home to some of our most important projects and facilities, including the $358 million Panhandle Expansion project, community expansion projects, the Dawn Hub natural gas storage facility, and potentially carbon capture and storage projects which could attract billions of dollars in investments and create tens of thousands of jobs.
“These projects are about creating opportunities for rural Ontario,” Gladstone said.
