    Mechanical Engineering | R&D @MetHyperloop

From November 22-25, I had the honour of representing over 5,000 Metropolitan engineering students in front of 53 CFES member societies at CDE 2024 at Western University. As a first-generation immigrant, this conference became more than just a learning experience, it was a powerful reminder of why I’m so passionate about creating an engineering field where everyone, regardless of their background, can be seen, heard, and valued. CDE 2024 was a transformative experience for me. It allowed me to rethink what engineering really means and how I, as a young engineer, can actively contribute to an industry that’s more inclusive, empathetic, and accessible. From uncovering biases in the data we work with to learning how we can design for accessibility, each session inspired me to think critically about how engineering can make a real difference in our communities. I was particularly inspired by the leaderships of The Hon. Omar Alghabra, Philip Rizcallah, P. Eng, and Jeanette Southwood, P.Eng., FCAE, FEC, LL.D.(honoris causa), whose lessons on integrity, courage, and equity reaffirmed my belief that engineers must lead with empathy and evolve with society’s changing needs. Their words reminded me that as engineers, we don’t just solve problems, we have the power to drive meaningful change. I am grateful to Sara H. Tamrin and Cassie P. for their inspiring contributions to embedding EDI values in research design and advocating for equity and accessibility. Finally, a special thank you to my fellow delegates for your shared experiences, and to Rayyan Faisal and the Metropolitan Undergraduate Engineering Society for selecting me for this incredible experience. I hold immense respect for the efforts of the OC, CFES | FCEG, and the Faculty of Engineering at Western University for making this event possible, your hard work was truly evident. To all the speakers and panellists, thank you for your invaluable contributions. I’m excited to carry these lessons forward as I continue to advocate for greater equity and inclusion in engineering.

📣 Call for Sub-Committee Members 📣 We are looking for volunteers to be part of one of four committees working towards the development of profession-specific climate change adaptation competencies for engineers, planners, landscape architects and accountants. The Professions Advancing Adaptation Competencies (PAAC) project aims to assess existing professional climate change adaptation competencies and develop recommendations for the introduction or consideration of climate adaptation competencies at a national level for specific professions. The Climate Risk Institute together with the Resilience by Design Lab at Royal Roads University and South Arm Training with funding from Natural Resources Canada, are undertaking the project.  A Steering Committee made up of relevant agencies and organizations including Engineers Canada, Canadian Institute of Planners, Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada), Ouranos and Western University has been assembled to provide guidance and direction.  We are looking for engineering, accounting, planning and landscape architecture professionals with experience or interest in climate change adaptation issues. Through facilitated discussion and activities, committee members will work towards the development of profession-specific climate change adaptation competencies and associated competency levels applicable to their profession. If you are interested, please go to the application form where you can find more information about the role and where you can apply! https://lnkd.in/gDKQh2pJ   The deadline to submit your application is December 6th, 2024. Please share if you know someone that might be interested in this opportunity and reach out to Megan Gereghty at CRI should you have any questions (megan.gereghty@climateriskinstitute.ca). #engineering #planning #accounting #landscapearchitecture #climatechange #adaptation #competencies #professionaldevelopment

❗Help advance the development of a guide on how to apply equity considerations to climate-resilient infrastructure! As a national leader in diversity and inclusion research, we are developing a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) on behalf of the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). The PAS will outline guidance and provide the necessary framework to apply an equity lens to disaster- and climate-resilient infrastructure project design and portfolio management. It will help municipalities with decision-making and risk management relating to their infrastructure by guiding them on how to prioritize construction, operation and retrofit in the context of climate change adaptation. ✏️ As part of the project, we're hosting an online review where you can comment on a draft of the PAS to help ensure it is usable. The draft PAS is available online for comment until November 25, 2024 at 5 p.m. ET: English: https://lnkd.in/gWjYqxCx French: https://lnkd.in/gGkyxTjF Your comments and suggestions will be reviewed by us and considered for the final publication. Thank you in advance for your input!
