Making a Global Impact: Mission Ethiopia - Dr. Bruce Pynn, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) from Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, joined Face the Future Foundation’s 58th mission in Ethiopia, where a team of volunteers performed 32 life-changing surgeries and trained over 50 local healthcare professionals. With fewer than 50 OMFS serving Ethiopia’s 133 million people, missions like this are critical. Dr. Pynn also secured $30,000 in funding to provide bone drills for future care. In November, talented students from Humber College’s Film & Television Production program brought their skills to the table, filming a PSA about the impactful work of Face the Future Foundation. Day 1 took place in a professional film studio in Oakville, while Day 2 was hosted at Dr. Matthew Brace’s Guelph Facial Plastics. Patient Spotlight: Dmytro, a 42-Year-Old Veteran of the Armed Forces of Ukraine For two years, Dmytro courageously defended the Donetsk region until a devastating injury changed his life—a tank shell exploded just meters away, leaving him in a coma for 18 days and requiring emergency brain surgery. Once Dmytro’s condition stabilized, Face the Future stepped in to help rebuild what he had lost. Surgeons installed a custom 3D-printed Materialise implant; replacing the crushed bones around his eye. Face the Future restored his breathing and filled the hole left from brain surgery through reconstructive work on his nose. All of these procedures have paved the way for Dmytro to receive future eye prosthetics. Thanks to our team's incredible efforts, Dmytro has made a remarkable recovery and returned home to his 10-year-old son.
