Yesterday, Dal’s Faculty of Science hosted an engaging Health Industry Career Panel as part of our Careers in Focus series. This insightful discussion featured three accomplished Dal Science alumni working in health-related fields in Halifax, who shared their experiences and advice to help current students navigate their career journeys. Lab members and awesome role models, Sarah Martell, Sana Kashgouli, and Dreenan Shea participated in the Techsploration Alumnae Conference today. They organized the "Green Energy: AI and Hydrogen to the Rescue!" workshop to highlight the emerging green hydrogen sector in Atlantic Canada. The workshop also highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary science how scientists from different fields need to come together to address complex issues like climate change. They spoke with the students to discuss academic and research careers during the round robin. I hope everybody had fun. We sure did!

Careers in Focus is a month-long series that highlights career paths to inspire and guide students as they prepare for their futures. Today, November 15, marks National Philanthropy Day, and the Faculty of Science would like to recognize the late Dalhousie University alum Mary Werner (BSc’57, MSc’60) and her husband, Douglas, for their support of students in science through two scholarships: the Mary Margaret MacNutt Undergraduate Scholarship and the Mary Margaret Werner Graduate Scholarship. “Mary and I had always hoped to endow both undergraduate and graduate scholarships in science at Dalhousie,” Douglas says. “Since she completed two degrees here, it’s fitting that her legacy gifts can support students who are in the early stages of their studies as well as those who are pursuing advanced degrees in their field.” Earlier this year, four graduate students were selected as the inaugural recipients of the Mary Margaret Werner Graduate Scholarship. Our series kicked off with the Clean Energy Career Panel, where we heard from trailblazing leaders who are shaping the future of clean energy. Best of luck to Faculty of Science alum and current biochemistry master's student Dina Rogers, who is taking the stage with a global field of competitors at tomorrow's Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin, Germany. In September, Dina advanced out of the Falling Walls Lab-Atlantic Canada competition with a pitch focused on bioengineered fungal proteins that devour plastic waste, which she calls "Pacmen with superpowers."
