First Response is under contract to numerous Municipalities, Cities and Towns to safely dismantle the structures and tents of Encampments and to deal with any Bio Haz Waste or Narcotics left on site. In this instance, a major fire occurred at one such encampment, involving the ignition of upwards of 20 BBQ propane cylinders. This posed a serious risk to the individuals inhabiting the encampment and to citizens in the surrounding area. The fire was likely initiated by the misuse of propane to facilitate in heating the camp. We are confident that occupants found shelter elsewhere with the help of the city’s outreach program. This operation demonstrates the complex and sensitive nature of managing homeless encampments, requiring a coordinated response from specialized teams and social services to ensure the safety and dignity of all parties involved while addressing serious public health concerns. Most of the Transportation Incidents that we get called to are on area highways. This one was a fatality when a van drove off a cliff. The extreme danger of lithium-ion battery fires has never been more prevalent than in recent events in Toronto. Our well-trained hazmat crews attended the large apartment parking garage fire that involved approximately 20 E-bikes. Our crew remain on site providing the removal and disposal of the lithium-ion batteries along with the entire garage cleanup. The second event was the multiple fatality involving a Tesla that crashed and caught fire. Shout out to our crew who endured the most arduous of tasks.
