I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kevin Carmichael at The Logic about Canada’s housing crisis and why the current economic model for building homes—particularly rental housing—is broken. When the model is broken, we need to rethink it. For too long, homeownership has been framed as the Canadian dream. But after living in Europe for years, where renting is a normalized and even celebrated choice, I was struck by how different the perception is here. In Canada, renting is often seen as a temporary compromise rather than a long-term, viable option. That mindset needs to change. At Fitzrovia, we are offering a competing dream: one of comfort and convenience. Not just a place to live, but a lifestyle built around service, community, and amenities that elevate everyday living. But even the best business models can’t solve this crisis alone. As Kevin notes, “the country is desperate for more shelter - an issue the political class has been obsessed with for years and yet construction is slowing... if governments want to turbocharge home construction, they will have to make bolder bets themselves…If the problem is supply, listen to the suppliers.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. Yesterday, our construction team, trades partners, and corporate team gathered at Marlow, our development at Bloor and Dufferin, to celebrate its official topping off. Guests enjoyed great fare, a lively raffle, and drinks and pastries from 10 DEAN café and bar. This was way tougher than it looked…. When asked at our 2023 Q4 Town Hall which department I would join if I weren’t CEO, my answer was clear—a barista—because of my love for hospitality and our 10 DEAN coffee & cocktail bar. Last summer, our 10 DEAN team put me to the test with a shadow shift at Parker, where I had the opportunity to serve and connect with our residents and neighbours at Yonge and Eglinton. It was a wonderful experience and a great reminder of the vibrant community that 10 DEAN and our on-site teams create every day.
