“As a registered non-profit charitable organization, we would not have been financially able to acquire such innovative technology without this pilot. The pilot and the FortisBC rebate made it possible, and the impact of this opportunity will touch many lives for many years.”

BIV News has published the third in a series of op-eds on the energy trilemma by Roger Dall'Antonia, our president and CEO. The series looks at the energy trilemma in B.C., noting the importance of a carefully balanced approach that provides reliability, sustainability and affordability now and in the years to come.
As a utility dedicated to meeting the energy needs of our nearly 1.3 million customers, FortisBC is working to strengthen reliability, sustainability and affordability—the three parts of the energy trilemma—as we help advance B.C.’s energy transition. In Part 3 of my series in BIV News, I take a look at how affordability is supported by a diverse energy mix that optimizes both energy delivery systems, expanded energy efficiency programs, and increased used of lower carbon fuels, like Renewable Natural Gas. https://lnkd.in/gDJiN7Gc

Celebrating a milestone! Our executive leadership team recently visited the Forte building in Vancouver, the first of four apartment buildings to complete an energy-efficiency makeover as part of our Deep Energy Retrofit Pilot. The project aims to find practical ways to cut energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions by more than half in older buildings. We tackled air leakage, modernized essential equipment and tested new approaches like solar panels for water pre-heating and gas-source heat pumps for space and water heating. Thank you to building owner BGO for their commitment and RDH Building Science and SES Consulting for their design, construction & technical expertise. Together, we’re learning what it takes to dramatically lower energy use in older buildings.

Proud to be part of this committee to evaluate new technology which has the potential to provide lower-carbon energy options for our customers and reduce overall emissions.
Today, we’re excited to announce B.C. energy leader FortisBC has joined our Market Development Advisory Committee to examine the potential for fusion energy deployment. With energy demand in B.C. forecasted to increase by 15% or more by 2030, clean and abundant fusion energy is well-positioned to support the province’s growing energy needs and power its path to net zero emissions by 2050. Through our MDAC, General Fusion is collaborating with key players in Canada, such as FortisBC, to commercialize our homegrown fusion technology and drive significant job creation and economic benefits in B.C. and across Canada through global exports. “At FortisBC, we actively evaluate new technology that has the potential to provide lower-carbon energy options for our customers and reduce overall emissions,” said Dawn Mehrer, vice president of corporate services and technology at FortisBC. “We are excited to work with General Fusion to support the development of an innovative energy solution that could one day play a role in B.C.’s energy transition.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gJ9Y9TnM

If the walls of your house could talk, what would they say? (No, not your deepest secrets.) Perhaps they’d whisper in drafts under the doors or rattles at the windows. Maybe the windows fog up on a cold day. At FortisBC, we responded to the needs of our province’s homes with the Deep Energy Retrofit Pilot Program: a whole house energy-efficiency renovation that can improve facets like windows, doors and insulation. We caught up with a trio of participants from the pilot. Hear what their walls talk about now in our latest blog: https://bit.ly/49zjpzX #EnergyEfficiency #HomeRenovation
