Grand Council Treaty #3's Health Team hosted a Health Council meeting this week in Winnipeg, MB. The Health Council includes representatives from each of the community Health Directors and from mandated health organizations for information sharing and discussion on community health needs and priorities. We're grateful to Chief McVicar and Councillor Amber Sinclair for joining Health Council and representing the Social Chiefs. This Health Council meeting included discussion on education pathways with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, an update on the Ontario Health Plan, Northern Ontario Home and Community Care, FIT Kit cancer screening, an update from the Ontario Renal Network, wound care, and the patient ombudsman.

Yesterday, in Thunder Bay, the Grand Council Treaty #3 Social Department hosted an important discussion on Advancing the Implementation of Abinoojii Inakonigewin. This gathering brought together representatives from over 14 Treaty #3 communities. The event highlighted the collaborative efforts and dedication of the Treaty #3 Nation in upholding Abinoojii Inakonigewin, the child care law that reflects our traditional values and ensures the well-being of our children and families. Chi Miigwech to White Spruce Drum, Elder Ida Skead, Elder Fred Kelly, and our Chiefs—Lynn Indian, Janice Henderson, Wayne Smith, John Machimity, and Shane Whitecrow—for their leadership. Miigwech to Ogichidaa Francis Kavanaugh, Gaakinawataagizod Cheynne Vandermeer, and facilitator Derrick Henderson for their guidance and contributions. Together, under the guidance of our Elders, the leadership of our Chiefs, and the collective efforts of our communities, we continue to make meaningful strides in implementing Abinoojii Inakonigewin. This journey reflects our enduring commitment to our children, families, and the future of Treaty #3.

PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 26 2024 National Healing Fund for Indigenous Survivors of Forced and Coerced Sterilization launches Winnipeg- The Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice announced the official launch of the Healing Support Fund for survivors of forced, coerced and imposed sterilization today. The Healing Support Fund will be available for all eligible First Nation, Metis and Inuit survivors to access a wide range of individual healing and wellness supports including mental health and trauma counselling, Cultural andLand-based healing, and wrap around services. Eligible survivors will also be able to access the Healing Support Fund for Assisted Reproductive Health technologies. Applications can also be made for community-based and grassroots healing initiatives led by or involving eligible survivors. “The Survivors Circle Healing Fund will create opportunities for Survivors of forced sterilization to take charge of their bodies and wellness,” said Survivors Circle Board Co-Chair Christa Big Canoe. “The fund will support survivors who have experienced systemic racism in unimaginable ways and will begin healing paths for individual survivors and their families and communities.” The Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice has formed a National Registry that will serve as a national database and archive for survivors stories, experiences and records. Registered members will be eligible to access the Healing Support Fund. Individual supports can be accessed for up to $10,000, Assisted Reproductive Technologies can be accessed for up to $30,000 and survivor-informed community initiatives can be accessed for up to $30,000. “For many women who have experienced forced sterilization, they have felt silenced by their experience,” said Survivors Circle Board member Nicole Rabbit.
