Our Regional Manager, Ricardo Paredes recently had the honour of presenting and engaging in a highly productive discussion with a distinguished group of professors and a talented group of Civil Mining Engineering students from Adolfo Ibáñez University in Santiago, Chile. The session focused on the variability in geological modeling and mine planning processes, emphasizing the role of advanced AI-driven technologies in supporting the mining industry’s evolving needs.   The involvement of the students added fresh perspectives to the conversation, and together with the professors, delved into the practical applications of AI tools. It was an enlightening afternoon of exchanging valuable insights on how these technologies are shaping the future of geological modeling and mine planning in Latin America and beyond. We are always learning new ways our technologies can advance the mining process and what better way to learn than with like-minded students. Heading into day two of #MRMR2024. Day one did not disappoint, some really great thought provoking presentations and conversations questioning our status quo. From David F. Machuca-Mory sparring with Clayton Deutsch on probabilistic versus drill hole spacing based classification schemes, to Guy Desharnais' interesting take on the problem of classification debt as projects advance. Seems classification is a hot topic with Mathieu Doucette also presenting a novel approach to objective classification with QP control built in. Was glad to see conversations surrounding implicit modeling techniques in the presentation by Amanda Baker, P.Geo, tying in nicely with Alain Carrier's presentation on the challenges in estimating spodumene-bearing pegmatite lithium deposits, where it was highlighted that uncertainty goes far beyond the grade estimate! Sitting on the resource estimation panel alongside Gabriela Brandao and Lucy Potter hosted by Clayton Deutsch was so much fun and an absolute honour! Conversations provoked some great questions from the audience, highlighting a hunger for better resource estimates through collecting data better, using the data better, extending resource estimation to all aspects of our operations, capturing the full spectrum of uncertainty, creating live models using up-to-date data, removing team silos, and harnessing technology. I am optimistic for the future of Canadian and global resource estimation and looking forward to day two!
