Today Longwoods Publishing convenes the leadership of the aged care sector at our Deloitte space 80% people age >80 can self manage @ 🏡 w/supports -Yet <13% can access 🏡 care at home And the population >80 yrs old is the fastest growing demographic So we warehouse people who do not need facility based care in hospitals and nursing homes Yet, the waitlist for (fixed) nursing home capacity is at all time high (50K waiting in Ontario, growing by 5K+/year) Family caregivers provide 75% of care today informally (sons, daughter, spouses, friends, family) … they are no where near ready for the amount of care they will need to supplement in the coming years given the multiple gaps in health and social care systems for the elderly Wicked problem. Silo’d medical model cannot work. The aged sector collectively landed on a path forward (see image)…. I think any of us would be in violent agreement on the What. But we have been saying these things for decades. And the gap is widening When will Canadian boomers and their care partners demand MORE? This year Canadians age 65+ will comprise ~20% of the population, the first time in the young history of this country that we are in the rare cohort of ‘super-aged’ Erik Landriault Debra Sandomirsky #DeloitteFutureOfHealth

It is Fall Prevention Month! Falls are a leading cause of injury and hospitalization among seniors, with significant impacts on health, quality of life, and healthcare costs. Investing in fall prevention programs not only improves seniors' well-being, but also offers a strong return on investment by reducing healthcare expenses and enhancing independence. A study by the *Public Health Agency of Canada* found that fall prevention programs could reduce fall-related hospitalizations by up to 30%. Programs such as "Stepping On" in Ontario and "EnhanceFitness" in British Columbia have proven effective in reducing falls and fall-related injuries through exercises, education, and environmental safety. These programs have been shown to reduce falls by as much as 35-40%, leading to significant healthcare cost savings. We also have a made in NB program, Zoomers In Balance: https://lnkd.in/eaMMt_3B Some studies have suggested that every dollar invested in fall prevention can save up to $5 in healthcare costs by reducing emergency room visits, hospital admissions, and long-term care needs. These programs not only protect seniors but also reduce the burden on the healthcare system.

📢 Exciting News! After months of research and collaboration, I’m thrilled to share the release of AGE-WELL National Innovation Hub APPTA's latest report: "Jurisdiction Scan: Diabetes Management Technology Coverage in Canadian Provinces." Released in alignment with Diabetes Awareness Month, this report examines the accessibility and government coverage of key diabetes technologies, including continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps, across Canada. While there are strides in diabetes management, disparities in access and affordability remind us of the work still needed to support Canadians living with this chronic condition. I’m proud to contribute to the conversation about improving care and advancing equitable solutions. 💻 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e-2ft6fJ Let’s continue raising awareness and driving change! #DiabetesAwarenessMonth #DiabetesManagement #APPTA #Innovation

The power of occupational therapy: Mr C’s story! Mr C is a 54-year-old man with a learning disability and cerebral palsy. Sleeping on a mattress on the floor created moving and handling risks for carers who were unable to support with transfers, with his family having to lift him onto a commode so transfers could be carried out using a stand aid. Watch the short video below to see how our solutions were able to regain and maintain Mr C’s independence, whilst removing the potential for any moving and handling risks. (Please note, Mr C is a fictional name attributed to a real-life use case of our solutions). #OccupationalTherapist #RCOT #OTWeek

Social prescribing is a powerful approach to health systems transformation. By empowering individuals to engage in meaningful activities and build new skills, we can foster more holistic and sustainable health outcomes. It's inspiring to see leaders like Dominik Nowak, Kimberley Floyd, and Rishika Thakur driving this vital change in healthcare delivery.

🇨🇦 It’s Time to Fix Ontario’s Auto Insurance System! 🇨🇦 Support healthcare professionals who are working hard to create a sustainable auto insurance system—one that benefits consumers with common-sense solutions. These ideas aim to: ✅ Reduce treatment costs ✅ Cut through red tape ✅ Lower auto insurance premiums ✅ Improve fairness for patients ✅ Build a sustainable system for future generations There’s a saying: executives know only 4% of what’s really happening, while the people on the ground see 100% of the issues. For over two decades, Ontario’s auto insurance system has been continuously modified, but instead of improving, it’s become more expensive—even with fewer accidents and reduced spending on care. The problem isn’t the people—it’s the system. And this time, we’re determined to make sure the changes are the right ones. Healthcare professionals witness the gaps, inefficiencies, and unfairness every single day. We know what needs to be fixed, but to do that, our voices must be heard. Just as in our public healthcare crisis, we’re paying for bureaucracy, not care. Let’s stop the insanity. Let’s prioritize patients and fairness over red tape and inefficiency. 📢 Share this post.
