The HLA exists to enable its members to become successful, respected, and fulfilled in their profession.
About us
Incorporated in 1879, The Hamilton Law Association is one of the oldest county and district law associations in the Province. It was created by the hard work and inspiration of Britton Bath Osler with the purposes of supporting a law library in the Court House, promoting the general interests of the profession, and encouraging and maintaining the good feeling and harmony of its members. The Association’s affairs are governed by trustees and officers who ensure that Association undertakings are within the mandate and in the best interests of our legal community. The many valued volunteers who are members of the numerous committees within the structure of the HLA strive to represent our membership consistently and effectively. The Anthony Pepe Memorial Law Library, operated within the scope of the HLA, is one of the largest law libraries in Ontario and houses over 30,000 volumes. The Hamilton Law Association continues to strive to educate and support its membership in the practice of law as well as to advocate for their interests as lawyers.

HLA Members, The Law Society of Ontario (LSO) has proposed governance and electoral reform and is seeking feedback. We are very interested in voicing our members' thoughts on this matter, and to that end, we are hosting a Town Hall on Tuesday, January 28th at the HLA Library starting at 3:30 pm. We will be joined by Andrew Spurgeon, Regional Bencher, Cara-Marie O’Hagen, Director of Policy of the LSO, and Naomi Bussin, the Corporate Secretary of the Law Society. Please RSVP using the following link: https://lnkd.in/ggbSvebZ Additionally, we are conducting a brief survey. To access, please use the following link: https://lnkd.in/gtT4qabE The key recommendations proposed include: 1. Reduced Convocation Size: The board will shrink to 30 members, with 14 elected lawyers, 2 elected paralegals, 10 appointed members (including lawyers, paralegals, and non-licensees), and 4 government-appointed non-licensees. 2. New Law Society-Appointed Members: A category for board members appointed directly by the Law Society. 3. Governance & Nominating Committee: A committee to oversee board appointments, featuring a retired Chief Justice, Board Chair, licensee board members, and independent public representatives. 4. Regional Representation: Elected lawyer positions will be allocated based on geographical regions, ensuring regional diversity. Elected paralegal positions will be divided between the GTA and outside it. 5. Voting Model: Voters will select candidates from their region, with special provisions for those without a local address. 6. Term Limits: Board members’ term limits will be reduced from 12 to 8 years. 7. Filling Vacancies: Vacancies will be filled through annual by-elections. The full proposal is available for review at the provided link: https://lnkd.in/gxvnbxB5
