About us

HB Studios creates award-winning video games from our studio in Nova Scotia. We are a team of developers, creators and fans who are passionate about the art and process involved in video game development. Across consoles, mobile devices and genres, we have a diverse team that has had hands-on experience in the creation and development of today’s biggest gaming titles and franchises. Our head office is a studio in picturesque Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. It’s not a big town, but it’s vibrant, creative and it lets us get down to what really matters – producing high-quality video games that outperform competitors and create the most authentic gaming experiences around. In 2016, we also opened a second development studio in the nearby city of Halifax, to help with growth and expansion. Since launching in 2000, we’ve shipped 47 titles that have sold over 27 million units, and we’ve contributed to 19 other titles. In 2017 HB Studios was named one of Canada's Top 100 small & medium Employers. As a company we are a passionate team of game designers, producers, programmers, artists, animators, UI artists, audio engineers and support staff known in the industry for our high quality sports games and with publishers for our professional and reliable delivery. We partner with the biggest names in the industry and are currently developing games across all current and upcoming gaming platforms. HB Studios has appeared regularly in the Develop 100: the list of the “World’s Best Game Studios.”

President and Studio Head at Firaxis Games

Today marks the start of Women’s History Month, an opportune time to celebrate the diverse women creating change at 2K, at Firaxis and in communities around the world. As a woman in gaming for the last 24 years, I have experienced unwavering professional and peer support. I have also faced discrimination and marginalization.  In those unfortunate situations, I was inevitably lifted up by someone who chose to invest in me, in my success, in my vision. As Studio Head at Firaxis, I’m proud to work at a company that invests in women and continues to accelerate our progress towards advancing equity. I’ve been told that I couldn’t be successful making AAA games because I lacked credibility. I’ve been asked to compromise my beliefs in order to be taken seriously. I’ve often asked myself why I must be more tenacious, more resilient, more flexible in order to be successful. Even though it can feel exhausting to constantly have to prove myself, I know our collective efforts as women today will help shape a more equitable employment landscape for future generations of powerful women. As the executive sponsor of our Women In Gaming ERG, I’m thrilled to support the women changemakers who are working for a more equitable future of gaming and technology. I’ve seen firsthand how creating games that incorporate diverse perspectives and voices is paramount to our success. Building participatory design into our development process and creating more equitable access is critical to build for the future. We need to strive for more games and technologies to serve more people, especially those from diverse and underrepresented identity groups. The theme for International Women’s Day (March 8th) this year is #inspireinclusion. Please join me in celebrating a woman in your life who inspires you. I’d like to specifically send some love to Kaye Vassey, one of our Senior Art Managers at Firaxis.  Kaye is one of the most tenacious and thoughtful leaders in our industry, and I am humbled and inspired by her journey. Finally, I want to give special thanks to all the remarkable individuals at Firaxis who inspire me every day. Thank you for your partnership, your friendship and for always striving to build a more equitable and inclusive world for generations to come. Happy Women's History Month!
