Mushroom gills are fascinating structures. They sit just beneath the cap, forming a delicate framework. Their purpose? Spores. These microscopic particles are essential for mushroom reproduction. Each gill can release millions of spores into the air. The wind carries them far, spreading life wherever they land. Some spores rely on animals or water to move. The process ensures new mushrooms grow in fresh environments. Colour matters, too. Spores come in unique shades, helping identify species. Growers and foragers both depend on this. Foragers use spore prints to find safe mushrooms to eat. Growers, meanwhile, collect spores to cultivate fungi. This tiny cycle, from gills to spores, keeps mushrooms thriving. It’s a perfect balance of nature and reproduction. All from something so small.

Lion’s Mane mushrooms are powerful for health and wellness. With their tendril-like structure, they stand out in nature. These mushrooms contain hericenones and erinacines, unique brain-boosting compounds. Studies suggest they help grow new brain cells and improve memory. People also use Lion’s Mane to support focus and mental clarity. It’s a simple, natural way to promote brain health. But that’s not all. Lion’s Mane is rich in antioxidants and fights inflammation. This can support gut health, immunity, and overall well-being. Its mild flavour makes it perfect for cooking or taking as a supplement. A small daily dose can make a big difference.

Spent mushroom blocks are such a powerhouse in the garden. They: 1) Produce fresh mushrooms in days 2) Can amend garden beds better than most organic matter we've tried 3) Attract so many earth worms So much for being 'spent'. Follow along to learn when we are do spent block drop-offs.

Starting with the Basics: The Mushroom Business & the Unnoticed Aspects of Cultivation 𓍊𓋼𓆏 When people think of mushroom cultivation, they often imagine rows of mushrooms sprouting in climate-controlled rooms. But as anyone in the industry knows, growing mushrooms is much more complex than that—and the business behind it even more so. In the mushroom business, it’s not just about growing and selling; it’s about "understanding the entire ecosystem" around the cultivation process, both seen and unseen. As I dive deeper into this series on the "Unnoticed Aspects of Mushroom Cultivation", let’s first look at some foundational areas that are often misunderstood or overlooked: 1. Market Dynamics: It’s Not Just Supply and Demand - The mushroom industry is highly dynamic, with shifting demands for culinary mushrooms, medicinal mushrooms like Cordyceps, and even biobased materials. Understanding market trends is as crucial as mastering the growing techniques. 2. The True Cost of Substrate Preparation - Preparing the right substrate is more than just mixing ingredients. Time, energy, and even the smallest contamination can significantly impact yields, but this cost is rarely talked about in business discussions. 3. Scaling Up: It’s Not as Simple as it Seems - Going from small-scale cultivation to large-scale operations involves more than just space and resources. The precision required at scale, particularly with environmental controls, is a hidden challenge many new cultivators face. 4. Quality Over Quantity: A Business Dilemma - While producing large volumes of mushrooms might seem like the goal, the "quality" of the mushrooms—such as their nutritional content, texture, and appearance—can make or break your business. 5. Customer Education: Bridging the Gap - One of the unnoticed hurdles in the mushroom business is educating customers. Whether you’re selling culinary mushrooms or introducing mycelium-based products like packaging or leather, helping people understand the value of your product is key to success. As the mushroom business evolves, it’s important to recognize that "the unseen challenges often define your success". From preparation to market positioning, these unnoticed aspects can make a world of difference. Stay tuned as we explore more of these hidden elements in the coming posts. The mushroom industry is full of surprises, and I’m excited to share them with you! 𓍊 #mushlove🍄 #UnnoticedAspectsofMushrooms #MushroomBusiness #Mycology #Sustainability #MushroomCultivation #BiobasedMaterials #MedicinalMushrooms

We're experimenting with ways we can use our mushroom compost to create new products.

I think we can replace plastic, peat and coco coir pots with mycelium pots. I'm trying to figure out how. This is a series on how to make better plant pots out of fungi ‘Better plant pots’ doesn’t tell you much. But for the purpose of this series it means Starting seedlings in containers that: - do not contain plastic - are not imported from thousands of kilometres away - don’t require dredging out peat bogs and degrade into the soil - add nutrient to the soil along the way.
