About us

Hifi develops high fidelity fiber optic monitoring technology for oil and gas applications. Our turn key fiber optic sensing platforms include specialized sensing cables, data acquisitions systems, various artificial intelligence and machine learning software algorithms and interface software. Hifi is dedicated to developing extremely high quality sensing, using specialized, fiber optic sensors and software, specifically designed for solving oil & gas related challenges including preventative pipeline leak detection and operational monitoring. Hifi has over 60 patents, and was the 2013 winner of the ASTech award presented by the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Foundation for outstanding achievements in science and technology, the Global Petroleum Show 2019 Digital Innovator of the Year award, the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) Foundation 2019 Innovation award, and the 2021 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Leadership Award for excellence in the fiber optic sensing industry. Hifi Engineering is privately owned, with Cenovus Energy, Enbridge and BDC as investors, and is a member of the Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA), APEGA and the CEPA Foundation.     Hifi’s High-fidelity Distributed Sensing (HDS) platform cutting-edge fiber optic sensor system leverages patented sensing fiber architecture to overcome the issues limiting the performance of early generation systems, bringing a host of new capabilities and benefits to pipeline monitoring. The versatility of our fiber optic cables allows for deployment directly onto the pipe, near the pipe, or inside the pipe, tailored to the specific needs of each project. Key to our HDS architecture are Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), which dramatically improve and control the return of light at specific wavelengths while maintaining high fidelity over long distances. This makes our system ideal for distributed fiber optic sensing applications, providing high-resolution monitoring with minimal performance degradation over extended distances. One of the standout benefits of our high-fidelity DFOS systems is their ability to support long-distance monitoring with excellent per-metre economics, making them a game-changer for extensive deployments. Let's explore a few case studies that demonstrate the power and utility of this technology: Pig Tracking & Analysis: Tracking inline tools is pretty straightforward for Hifi’s High-fidelity Distributed Sensing (HDS) technology. Its exceptional precision and sensitivity make HDS well suited for this type of analysis, in one instance detecting and tracking a pipeline inspection gauge (pig) in a 4-inch condensate pipeline to provide crucial data on its speed and location. This capability not only enhances operational efficiency but can also lead to significant cost savings by reducing or eliminating the need for third-party pig detection services. Anomaly Detection: HDS provides a wealth of additional insights while tracking inline tools, capturing anomalous acoustic signatures along the pig’s path that, in some cases, alert operators to unexpected activities or areas of increased operational risk. This early warning system allows operators to investigate and address potential issues before they escalate into major problems. Remediation Support: DFOS technology has proven invaluable in monitoring the progress of ovality remediation efforts on inaccessible sections of damaged pipe. By measuring strain levels during successive caliper pig runs, maintenance teams can assess the effectiveness of their remediation efforts in real-time, without the need for costly and complex integrity digs.
