🎓 How can we tell when something has been #AI-generated? Especially when it has been included in a credible #academic journal or when the results come from someone who has claimed to be an #expert in their field of study. The #integration of AI into academia has sparked such inquiries and more, leading many to fear the integrity of research in the presence of #GenerativeAI. Journals such as the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences and the Journal of the American Chemical Society, both emphasize that AI tools cannot be credited as #authors nor should they be used with the assumption that they produce #credible #data. These guidelines highlight a critical distinction: while AI can assist in the research process, the responsibility for the work’s #integrity and #accuracy lies solely with the human authors. By navigating the intersection of AI and academia with #transparency and #caution, we can harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding the principles of academic integrity, ensuring that scholarly communication remains a human-centred endeavour. 🌐 Are people doing enough to ensure the academic integrity of their work? Only time will tell. 🤖 Learn more about HighrEd AI and our contributions to the future of Artificial Intelligence in Academia by attending "The AI-Enabled Educator" Conference on October 16, 2024. 📝 From ensuring data privacy and #AcademicIntegrity to avoiding biases, academics are recognizing that the responsible use of #AI is crucial for fostering a fair and equitable #academic environment. While AI can offer valuable #assistance, such as enhancing the clarity of feedback, it is crucial to maintain #EthicalBoundaries. 🖥️ Journals such as The Engineering Reports allow the limited use of AI tools by editors or peer reviewers for #editing and data verification while being clear that it is the author's #responsibility and #accountability to undertake the peer review of a submitted #manuscript." 🖥️ However, the Canadian Journal of Chemistry and the Journal of American Culture restrict the explicit use of AI in #PeerReview altogether, emphasizing that the #confidentiality and #integrity of the process must remain in human hands. These journals also caution against uploading manuscripts into AI tools, which could compromise privacy and violate #copyright. By adhering to these guidelines, journals can leverage AI's benefits without undermining the ethical standards that underpin academic publishing. 🤝 🔗 Want to learn more? Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a sweeping concern coming into the new school year, particularly among students. A recent report from Inside Higher Ed notes that 55% of students believe that the overuse of AI in teaching has devalued education, and 52% feel it has negatively impacted their academic performance. It seems that despite student’s opinions of AI, some 86% have reported that they regularly use it! So, what do we do? My life experiences, especially as a former Microsoft executive, have taught me not to fear technology but to recognize its value when used responsibly. UVU is a teaching institution, and we are teaching our students how to APPLY AI. We recently created an AI Institute, utilize an AI teaching assistant in larger classes, and instilled an AI Task Force to support faculty and staff in learning how to use AI. This prepares our students with a relevant education, making them workforce-ready! It is important to remember that AI will never be a substitute for human creativity because while people can dream, AI cannot. So, get inspired, dare to dream, and stay human. If you know how to use AI effectively and responsibly, you will always have a job! KSL Interview: https://lnkd.in/db8ph4yN Inside Higher Ed Article: https://lnkd.in/d8Zn5UYg
