This past weekend, on November 9th, masked protestors stood outside of Jackson Square holding a banner that read “MASS DEPORTATIONS NOW” IWC strongly condemns all hateful rhetoric seeking to create fear, discrimination and division. We stand with immigrants and all marginalized groups as we continue to advocate for communities where all feel safe, respected and valued. OUR STATEMENT: “The hateful demonstration from masked protestors at Jackson Square last weekend was an explicit display of the growing anti-immigrant sentiment plaguing not only Hamilton, but our nation. IWC strongly denounces all forms of hate, racism and discrimination. Hate groups have become emboldened, capitalizing off fear to promote their intolerant and hateful rhetoric. We will not stand for immigrants and marginalized groups to be targets of this divisive ideology. The call for mass deportations goes against our values where all community members, including immigrants, feel safe, respected, and accepted. There is no place for hate in Hamilton. IWC stands together with immigrants, organizations and community leaders as we work to make Hamilton a city where safety, belonging and equal opportunity are paramount. We remain vigilant in protecting these values and the rights of immigrants who choose to make Hamilton their home.”

On Monday, September 30th, we will recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. We take this opportunity to publicly commemorate and honour Survivors of the residential school system, their families and the children who never made it home. The haunting legacy of residential schools has had lasting impacts that are felt through generations. As a newcomer-serving organization, we understand our responsibility in the journey toward Reconciliation. Through collective learning and reflection, we remain committed to educating our clients, students and staff on the heritage and traditions of Indigenous peoples and the history of the land we live and work on. There are several ways you can stand in support with Indigenous community members. If you’re interested in learning more, please visit our website at https://lnkd.in/gMec6Ck5 #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters #NDTR
