Did you know that your DNA can affect how you respond to different medications? Stacey is a pharmacist helping people to optimize, streamline and reduce medication use. She works to spread awareness about the importance of pharmacogenetic testing. More than 99.9% of people have gene variants that impact their response to at least one commonly used medication. This test is very useful in the realm of mental health. Additionally, up to 10% of people taking common pain relievers, such as codeine, won't experience any pain relief. A simple DNA test can help you predict your response to medications. This test can be done by anyone to help find the right medications for you, ideally before you need them. A medication designed to save lives should never cost someone their own. Tragically, this was the case for the Kapoor family, who lost Dr. Anil Kapoor just weeks after he began cancer treatment with Fluorouracil (5-FU). This heartbreaking outcome highlights a major gap in current cancer treatment protocols. Despite pre-screening, Dr. Kapoor suffered a fatal reaction to 5-FU because his genetic variant—one that could have predicted the risk—was not included in standard screening methods, which only test for four variants. The solution is clear: the need to test for more genetic variants is critical, especially for non-white populations. This approach can help prevent unnecessary deaths and enable truly personalized cancer care. That's why at Inagene we test for 7 gene variants so that we can better identify safety risks across a more diverse population. Our complete health test includes over 90% of commonly prescribed medications, including cancer treatments. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g9wur7-E

How do you know if your antidepressant side effects are normal? Antidepressants like SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, MAOIs, and NASSAs can provide significant relief from mood disorders, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. However, finding the right medication often involves encountering disruptive side effects, which can make the process challenging. It's important to note that the most common side effects of antidepressants typically resolve within a few weeks as your body adjusts. Factors like age, genetics, and medication type also influence how an individual responds to these drugs. Traditionally, individuals experiencing difficult side effects have undergone a lengthy trial-and-error process, tapering off one medication to try another. Thankfully, advancements in science are changing this. Pharmacogenetic testing uses your DNA to identify the medications most likely to work for you while minimizing side effects. With a simple 5-minute cheek swab from home, you can take the guesswork out of finding the right treatment. Shop now at https://lnkd.in/g8ddVzfq

"If four full 737s were crashing daily with no survivors, there would be a public outcry and immediate governmental intervention. Yet, in the United States, an equivalent number of people lose their lives daily, that’s about 275,000 American lives annually — to adverse drug events (ADEs)." That comparison was made in the MedCity News article "First Do No Harm: Support Legislative Efforts to Combat the Adverse Drug Event Epidemic". This is where pharmacogenetic testing can help keep you safe. Personalizing your treatment plan based on your DNA means you can avoid trial and error and reduce the risk of negative side effects by 30%. The author of one really famous study called the PREPARE study said that there are no precedents to his knowledge for other interventions that have reduced the likelihood of adverse drug events by this magnitude. Not everyone reacts to prescription drugs in the same way. In fact, most people don't. Earlier this year, the manufacturers and distributors of the popular blood thinner Plavix were ordered to pay Hawaii $916 million for failing to disclose key information about the medication’s efficacy and safety after it was found to produce a diminished response in 30% of patients—many of whom are non-Caucasian. This was of particular interest to the state of Hawaii, as it could disproportionately affect Indigenous Polynesian communities. The reality is that over 99.9% of the population has genetic variations that impact how pharmaceutical medications are processed by the body. Pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing aims to reduce harm and adverse drug events by equipping patients with personalized health data to help them choose medications best suited to their genetic makeup. Making this testing standard practice could lead to a safer healthcare system—not only with fewer cases of diminished response and adverse events, but also fewer lawsuits. This is the future we envision at Inagene. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gTkmpVrz

Meet our Mass-spectrometer! This is the machine we use to analyse DNA that helps us understand how your genes impact your medication response. Your results are guaranteed to be 99.9% accurate. This machine strikes large molecules with laser energy into minimal ion fragments to determine the molecular weight of proteins, peptides, and other macromolecules (1). Mass spectrometers have been used for DNA analysis since 1988 (2). You may have heard of a mass-spectrometer before. In 1999, at the start of the 86th Tour de France it was announced that the National Laboratory for the Detection of Doping will give the results of its research concerning the detection of natural and synthetic corticoids (3). They were now able to employ the technique of mass spectrometry on a rider’s urine sample and better analyse its chemical make-up to identify who was doping (3). Lance Armstrong was one of the people caught by the new test. Mass spectrometry has played a decisive role in doping analysis and doping control in human sport for almost 40 years. The standard of qualitative and quantitative determinations in body fluids has always attracted maximum attention from scientists. With its unique sensitivity and selectivity properties, mass spectrometry provides state-of-the-art technology in analytical chemistry (4).
