As part of our jobs, we stay on top of the venture capital trends in B.C. and Canada to better inform our strategy, including identifying any market gaps and growth sectors in B.C. Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA) recently released their YTD Q3 2024 Venture Capital Market Overview and here are some highlights: • Year to date in 2024, Ontario, Quebec and B.C. were the top three provinces for venture capital investment. • B.C. overtook Quebec for dollars invested for the first time since 2021, contributed by legaltech company Clio's significant fundraise. Both provinces have already exceeded its 2023 totals. • B.C.-based Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology raised the largest round in Canada on record, closing at $1.24B. • B.C. made up 32% of total investment value in Canada, largely driven by 48 deals in Vancouver. • The top sectors in B.C. by deal size were information & communications tech (ICT), cleantech and life sciences. • Across Canada, cleantech investment is on track to surpass the record highs of 2022, with deal sizes rising 43% year over year. • Average deal values climbed by 14% while the number of deals decreased, indicating investors are trending toward larger transactions and later stage deals. Investment announcement 📣 InBC has invested in Svante, a climate tech company that develops nanoengineered filters and rotary contactor machines to trap and remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial emissions and the air. Svante is currently constructing a 141,000-square-foot facility in Burnaby, B.C., which will have the filter manufacturing capacity to capture 10 million tonnes of CO2 every year – equivalent to taking over 2.3 million gas-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year off the road. It will use this investment to accelerate the delivery of carbon capture and removal projects domestically and abroad. InBC's investment in Svante is supporting a strategic growth sector in B.C., increasing jobs and innovation in the province and driving measurable climate action.
