Did you know? A total of 139 residential schools operated in Canada and are identified in the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement. However, this doesn't include day schools (there were over 699 of these) or those schools run by provincial governments and solely by religious orders, according to the TRC. The very last residential school in Canada, located in Saskatchewan, closed in 1996. A map of the schools can be found here. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gKPcQQtU #NIHM #IndigenousHistoryMonth #IndigenousPeople #Indigenous #ResidentialSchool

We’re continuing our summer of storytelling with the latest from our Research & Impact Unit’s body of insightful, incisive research: Key Components of Indigenous Pedagogies, a literature review authored by Tiana Bone, a Research Assistant with the Research Knowledge Nest (RN) program. This review looks at how Indigenous pedagogies (the ways in which knowledge is taught) are included and implemented within teacher education programs across Canada. It’s critically important to examine how to better support Indigenous students who are considering careers as educators, so they can make informed decisions about where to attend post-secondary education based on Indigenous ways of learning and support. The review also features gorgeous cover art by the talented Emily Kewageshig. It’s a VERY worthwhile read, so check it out at the link below! 👇 https://lnkd.in/gmHfq3ZR #LiteratureReview #Research #IndigenousResearch #NIHM #IndigenousHistoryMonth #IndigenousPeople #Indigenous

Did you know? Residential schools were religious schools that were established to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture. Residential schools were created as an attempt to both educate and convert Indigenous youth and to assimilate them into Canadian society. However, the schools disrupted lives and communities, causing long-term problems among Indigenous peoples. To learn more about the history of residential schools in Canada, click on the link below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/ezwXtiF #NIHM #IndigenousHistoryMonth #IndigenousPeople #Indigenous #ResidentialSchool
