In 1974, four young indigenous men of the Pinaymootang First Nation on the Fairford Indian Reserve in Manitoba were wrongfully convicted in the murder of Ting Fong Chan. Brian Anderson (right) and AJ Woodhouse (left) were exonerated in July 2023, and Clarence Woodhouse was exonerated last week on October 3, 2024. The fourth - Clarence’s brother, Russell Woodhouse passed away in 2011. Last year, we filed a posthumous application with the Minister of Justice on Russell’s behalf - and we are hopeful that the Minister will grant a remedy soon!🤞🏽 📸 photo 1: Brian Anderson (right) and AJ Woodhouse (left) by Tyson Coschik CBC News 📸 photo 2: Clarence Woodhouse by Mikaela Mackenzie Winnipeg Free Press

James Lockyer (LZZ) and Pamela Zbarsky (IC) are representing intervener Innocence Canada today at the Supreme Court of Canada in Bouvette v. His Majesty the King. They will be asking the Court to take this opportunity to set boundaries for when an acquittal should be entered in wrongful conviction cases, and that the power to enter an acquittal should be made broader than it appears to be under existing jurisprudence.

We are growing! We are looking for a passionate and driven staff lawyer to join our legal team. We are the only national organization working to overturn wrongful convictions in Canada, working exclusively on homicide cases. We have proudly helped exonerate 29 innocent people over the past 31 years. Innocence work is a specialized area of criminal law that only a handful of lawyers across Canada have expertise in and we are so excited to open up opportunities to expand our legal team and continue this important work. Please direct any questions to our fabulous Legal Director, Pamela Zbarsky. She can be reached via email, pzbarsky@innocencecanada.com. You can also catch her in person this Wednesday October 2 at our Wrongful Conviction Day Gala! (to RSVP, https://lnkd.in/eUWDX-Ty) Applications close on October 31.
