We are calling out to our community 📣 This past November, the Institute for Community Prosperity embarked on a new initiative, StartWork, in partnership with the Government of Alberta and The Northpine Foundation. StartWork provides employment training and Canadian work-experience to refugees in Calgary as an alternative to Alberta Income Support. Over the past few months, StartWork participants have been in employment training through one of our dedicated community partners, Momentum Calgary, Centre for Newcomers, WINS (Women In Need Society), and FireX3. These individuals are now transitioning from employment training to employment. This is where you come in! Many of these individuals have professional experience and education in their home countries and are seeking employment opportunities in their respective fields (engineering, HR/ Finance, administration and IT). Others are seeking entry level employment in carpentry, hospitality and food service and/or warehouse related work. Do you know of any employment opportunities through your organization or your own networks? Please direct any employment leads our way! We are stronger together. Thank you! Anitopisi Learning Circles are back! The first Anitopisi Learning Circle will be held on Wednesday, January 22nd at 3:00PM at the Trico Changemakers Studio and will be on the topic of Leadership and Values, with Tori McMillan. Tori is the Director of the Iniskim Centre here at Mount Royal University and is a member of Berens River First Nation, located in Treaty 5 territory on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg. Tori is also currently doing his PhD in the field of reconciliation and will be studying learning circles as a potential tool. His thesis work and research combined with abundant experience in education and reconciliation gives him a wealth of knowledge to offer. He will be sharing insights around leadership and values from an Ojibway perspective, and will facilitate some discussion around the significance and complexity of implementing reconciliation in higher education settings. Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a celebration for Steacy Pinney (Collyer) next chapter! For the past two years, Steacy has been working in community and at Mount Royal University as ICP’s Changemaker in Residence. At the start of the residency, Steacy was engaged in the “Dandelion Strategy” to oversee the dissolution of the non-profit organization Calgary Reads. Through this process, Calgary Reads programs and knowledge were passed to seven seed partners so that they could continue to grow and have an impact on community, even as the organization ceased operations. Once that work wrapped up, Steacy joined the Literacy Lab Counsel. The Literacy Lab is a multi-year social lab with a focus on addressing the challenges related to childhood literacy in Calgary. We feel so privileged to work with Steacy and be a chapter in her incredible changemaking journey. For many years, Steacy has been an incredible advocate for children, education, and literacy and we look forward to seeing what her next chapter brings!
