Presenting next week for ISSP uOttawa at my alma mater. By way of sneak peak, my talk is all about the proliferation of robotics (including drones). This is quitely explosive, because our institutions dont quite recognize the trend yet. We tend to break up the concept of robotics in such a way that makes it artificially difficult to recognize and therefore govern, difficult to invest in, and difficult to scale. I say that this is an artificial division of the concept of robotics because the technology on its own remains a discrete category and technological progress is continuing as such. We should be preparing for whiplash when the governance comes into better alignment because we will all of a sudden be faced with how much progress the technology has made while we were ontologically blind to the trend. A final comment in my sneak peak. I am not afraid of this progress in robotics and see no reason for others to be either. Robotics gets the sci-fi treatment which worries some, but it is no more intrisically good or bad then the invention of better internet connectivity or more efficient garbage trucks. The only fear I have is that we miss out on an opportunity for our society because when the moment to act came, we didnt see the forest for the trees.

Dr. Woodson is a temporary program officer at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Foundation in the Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES) and an associate professor at Stony Brook University’s Department of Technology and Society. His research focuses on the global effects of #technology on inequality and strategies to improve diversity in #STEM and maximize the societal benefits of #sciencefunding.
