The National Representational Organization Protecting and Advancing the Rights and Interests of Inuit in Canada
About us
Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) is the national representative organization for Inuit in Canada, the majority of whom live in Inuit Nunangat, the Inuit homeland encompassing 51 communities across the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (Northwest Territories), Nunavut, Nunavik (Northern Quebec), and Nunatsiavut (Northern Labrador). Inuit Nunangat makes up 40 percent of Canada’s land area and 72 percent of its coastline. ITK represents the rights and interests of Inuit at the national level through a democratic governance structure that represents all Inuit regions. ITK advocates for policies, programs, and services to address the social, cultural, political, and environmental issues facing our people.

October 16 was World Food Day, and this year’s theme is Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future. All people have a right to adequate, safe, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food, yet 71 per cent of Inuit in Canada experience food insecurity, the highest documented prevalence in any Indigenous people living in an industrialized country. ITK’s 2025 pre-budget submission seeks to close this gap, calling for $1.788 billion over 15 years to fund an Inuit Nunangat-wide school food program and $100 million over four years for continued implementation of the Inuit Nunangat Food Security Strategy, which provides solutions for ending hunger and supporting the development of a sustainable Inuit food system. https://lnkd.in/eSNDZX-D
