It’s Canadian Patient Safety Week 2024 and we are proud to support Healthcare Excellence Canada's campaign to raise awareness about harm and its lasting effects on the health of communities.     This week will be showcasing the voices of the Health Standards Organization (HSO) and Accreditation Canada community who are bravely calling out the issues and bringing forth evidence-based solutions for positive change. Recognizing the indicators and understanding the effects of harm is crucial, for both health care providers and patients, as we work together to create safer care.

  • As an affiliate of HSO and Accreditation Canada, IQMH is recognizing #WorldMentalHealthDay to highlight the importance of a safe, healthy working environment to support mental health at work.

Mental health and work are not just closely linked, they are directly connected to patient safety. Amidst a workforce crisis, health care leaders must understand that there is no quality without a healthy, competent workforce. As part of our strategic priority to strengthen the health of communities, we are proud to offer the HSO’s Global Workforce Survey. This first-of-its-kind survey instrument provides actionable evidence by bringing insights from workforce wellness and safety culture together. https://lnkd.in/e9qnZYs6 #WorldMentalHealthDay

Today, as we reflect on the profound importance of Truth and Reconciliation in our journey towards unlearning and relearning, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing cultural safety, humility, and anti-racism into all aspects of our work. HSO and Accreditation Canada recognize that the process of Truth and Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, and not limited to the month of September. Driven by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, HSO and AC stand firmly committed to work alongside First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals, families, and communities to advance the principles of Truth, Rights, and Reconciliation in the design and delivery of health and social services. We encourage everyone to participate in the event Remembering the Children on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on September 30, if you can, or follow it on broadcast channel APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network). Together, we can make a difference. #TruthandReconciliation #OrangeShirtDay https://hubs.la/Q02Rn_Qc0

  • World Patient Safety Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of safe and high-quality health care. This year’s World Patient Safety Day theme, Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety, highlights the importance of a correct and timely diagnosis. The failure to establish a correct and timely diagnosis can limit patients from accessing the care and treatment they need. IQMH is committed to promoting laboratory quality improvement through its proficiency testing programs, providing valuable insight to laboratories to ensure patient safety and improve overall health outcomes. • Dr. Larissa Matukas, MD, FRCPC, is the Head of the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Disease Consultant Department of Laboratory Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Unity Health Toronto and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Larissa Matukas reflects on her time on the Bacteriology Scientific Committee as the chair: “As a committee member, it has been enlightening to hear and share expert experiences across Canadian labs. As the chair, I feel responsible for ensuring that all our stakeholders are included in the decision-making process and that is why this year we started to request feedback on our newly revised Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing consensus practice recommendation (CPR), and we will follow this process for all new CPR updates. Our goal is to raise the bar for all labs and to help every microbiology lab reach its potential by providing the most up-to-date guidance through our committee comments, patterns-of-practice surveys and CPRs. This work keeps me on my toes and helps me to be a better medical microbiologist. I am very grateful and humbled by this opportunity to lead and share.” Share your thoughts on how we can improve and what you’d like to see in the future. Your feedback is invaluable in guiding our efforts towards excellence. Click here to share your ideas: https://hubs.la/Q02pgt9j0 #WPSD2024 #MedLab #ProficiencyTesting
