A Pressure Equipment Inside Scoop! During a shutdown, magnetic particle testing (MT) did not identify cracks on the known welds of a vessel inside diameter. Nevertheless, shortly after start-up, the vessel leaked near one of the welds. A boat sample was extracted. With the boat sample, we identified two sections with deposited weld metal (DWM) where only parent metal or heat-affected zone should have been present. The surprise DWM had hardness values as high as 308 HV. Truly a surprise since the hardness of the parent metal ranged from 147 to 190 HV. The vessel was repaired, and to avoid surprises, this vessel section was changed once the replacement project could be executed. Today's scoops (Corrosion & Materials - Becht) can minimize or eliminate additional grinding and weld repair. "The cut depth is accurately and easily adjusted for a controlled cut. The Tiger Scoop can be used on any inside diameter pipe or vessel greater than 18 inches (457 mm) and any size outside diameter pipe or vessel." Field metallographic replication (FMR) gives us a great deal of information about thermal history, potential cracks, weld locations, and many other facts. However, often, when performing FMR, having a boat sample (a scoop) would help. Boat samples and scoops help to differentiate superficial from deeper changes. Rope Access can be essential to repair Pressure Equipment during Shutdowns! Facilitating access is one more example of the essential role of IRISNDT’s rope access personnel during shutdowns. IRISNDT personnel were called to assist during a pressure vessel top cone internal repair. The challenge? The only entry point was at the top of the vessel... The guided access support by IRISNDT's rope access personnel was indispensable to complete the repair effectively and on time: They expertly lowered scaffolders to erect a deck for welding personnel and guided welders and inspectors to the deck to perform repairs and quality control.
