Join GivingTuesday on December 3, the world's largest generosity movement 🌍. This Giving Tuesday, let’s support refugees. Donate today! They have faced incredibly difficult journeys to get here, often escaping conflict, persecution or climate change, often leaving family members, as one of our clients shared: “I grew up in Afghanistan until the Taliban invasion of August 2021. My family had no choice but to split up and seek refuge in neighbouring countries. My first year in Canada was the hardest. I had a challenging time making friends and was not motivated to socialize or connect with my local community. I joined a program at ISSofBC and began making friends and connecting with the community. These experiences helped me work on my communication, social skills, confidence, and self-esteem. Looking back on my first year, I can’t believe how much has changed. I never thought I would see my older siblings again and be as happy as I am now.” This holiday season if you would like to donate cash for gift cards or buy a grocery gift card, please email rebecca.irani@issbc.org 📧 You can also provide a donation to our private refugee sponsorship program 🤝 that unites families. "I really enjoyed the conference and had the chance to connect with so many wonderful people from different provinces...It was exciting to see discussions on how AI and various tech tools can be used within the settlement sector to enhance service delivery." - Anastasiia Prigorodova A big #thankyou to the Pathways to Prosperity Partnership for hosting several of our staff at this year's National Conference, including Ajlin Mehmedi, Ewa Karczewska, Chris Friesen, Shae Viswanathan, Biss Jordahl and Jennifer York. This year’s Conference theme was 'Supporting Newcomers to Canada: A Roadmap to Inclusive Collaboration for Collective Impact'. This was chosen to recognize the different sectors outside the settlement sector that contribute to the settlement and integration of newcomers in Canada. Cross-sector partnerships have the potential to improve the quality and sustainability of service delivery for newcomers in #britishcolumbia and elsewhere, so we're excited this important topic received attention at this year's event. As an example of the power in partnerships, Jennifer led a workshop on Collaborative Case Management, representing the Alliance for BC Settlement. We're super excited by this new partnership with Greater Vancouver Food Bank and Immigrant Services Society of BC! Food insecurity is a major challenge many refugees and immigrants face, sometimes for several months or even years after their arrival due to the increasing cost of living that's impacting everyone across #Canada. We look forward to working with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank to compliment each other's skills and support! #newpartnership #partnerships #support #communitysupport #foodbank #immigration #community #congratulations #food #foodinsecurity
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank is incredibly excited to officially launch our new "FRESH Start Program." Although greatly impactful, on its own giving food has become a band-aid solution in a world that requires sustainable solutions. Giving food is not enough to address the root of one’s underlying situation. The FRESH Start Program's vision originates from our desire to create lasting solutions through streamlining services. I am thrilled to announce that our first partnerships are with WorkBC.ca and Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants ISSofBC. Through active collaboration, we are ready to enact change to help those in need not only survive but SUCCEED.

They have faced incredibly difficult journeys to get here, often escaping conflict, persecution or climate change, often leaving family members, as one of our clients shared: "I came to British Columbia with my wife and our son as refugees from Syria. The language barrier was a significant challenge, as we had to learn a new language to communicate effectively and integrate into Canadian society. We enrolled in ISSofBC English language courses, while our son went to childcare. As our language skills improved, we seized every opportunity that came our way. My background is in construction so, using my new English skills, I got a job in flooring. My wife took computer classes to improve her computer skills with ISSofBC. She also joined an ISSofBC English conversation circle session to practice and make new friends. Less than a year after we arrived in BC, we’ve had remarkable success. I have a job, allowing us to live a stable life and my wife is improving her English, learning about Canadian culture and making friends daily!” This holiday season if you would like to donate cash for gift cards or buy a grocery gift card, please email rebecca.irani@issbc.org 📧 You can also provide a donation to our private refugee sponsorship program 🤝 that unites families.
