November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month which aims to highlight the impact of diabetes on eye health and raise awareness of the consequences of unhealthy behaviors. Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. It's caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the retina, and the back of the eye. If left untreated, it can lead to vision loss or even irreversible blindness. Diabetic eye disease often has no early warning signs, so it's important for people with diabetes to get regular eye exams. Journal of Optometry and Ophthalmology is accepting submissions for the upcoming issue. Diabetic retinopathy is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes. Diabetes interferes with the body's ability to use and store sugar (glucose). The disease is characterized by too much sugar in the blood, which can cause damage throughout the body, including the eyes. Over time, diabetes damages small blood vessels throughout the body, including the retina. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when these tiny blood vessels leak blood and other fluids. This causes the retinal tissue to swell, resulting in cloudy or blurred vision. Journal of Optometry and Ophthalmology is accepting submissions for the upcoming issue. Neuro-ophthalmology is an academically-oriented subspecialty that merges the fields of neurology and ophthalmology, often dealing with complex systemic diseases that have manifestations in the visual system. Neuro-ophthalmologists initially complete a residency in either neurology or ophthalmology, then do a fellowship in the complementary field. Since diagnostic studies can be normal in patients with significant neuro-ophthalmic disease, a detailed medical history and physical exam is essential, and neuro-ophthalmologists often spend a significant amount of time with the patient. In July, Eye Injury Prevention Month is celebrated. The goal is to bring awareness to the most common eye injuries and give patients basic tips to avoid them and protect the eyes. Eye injury prevention starts at home. While people mistakenly believe most eye injuries occur at work, nearly half happen in or around the house. Blepharospasm (also called benign essential blepharospasm) is blinking or other eyelid movements, like twitching, that a person can't control. Eyelid twitching usually goes away on its own. But people with benign essential blepharospasm can develop severe and chronic (long-term) eyelid twitching. Journal of Optometry and Ophthalmology is accepting submissions for the upcoming issue.
