Thanks for the post, Paul Nazareth, MFA-P, and the shout-out! This is an excellent article pointing out the pros and cons. This could be a strong opportunity for charities to encourage donations in Jan/Feb, it will provide administrative headaches, AND there is uncertainty around whether donors will be able to claim the donation in 2024, or whether it will be claimed in 2025. Another example of the importance of administrative strength, strong systems, and appropriate #charityoverhead to handle things!

*TAX RECEIPT EXTENSION NOT COMPROMISED BY PROROGATION* We have received questions regarding the timing of the legislation for the tax receipt extension. The prorogation won't affect the deadline or the spirit of the announcement made by the government to extend the deadline. The intent to introduce legislation is what allows CRA to count the receipts accordingly. Organizations and donors need not be worried by the fact that the legislation will be passed after the tax receipt extension. The eventual legislation was intended to be applied retroactively, and the prorogation doesn't change that. In fact, in 1997 when the federal government announced a similar measure for that year's postal strike, the bill that eventually implemented the month-long extension into January 31, 1998, wasn't passed until 1999. We are working with the Department of Finance on a FAQ for charities which we will share as soon as possible.
