Thanks Woodlands North Inc. for this great time lapse video of our watercourse crossing and fish habitat restoration project.
Remember last weeks post about Kiwetinohk Energy Corp. and Woodlands installing an arch that reconnected 57.7km of Bull Trout Habitat? Here is a timelapse of that project start to finish! #EnvironmentalConsulting #EnvironmentalConsultant #EnvironmentalServices #EnvironmentalCompliance #Ecology #Sustainability #Alberta #Canada #Conservation #reclamation #Environmental #Environment #nature #EcologicalRestoration #Makingadifference #environmentalscience #YEG #nature #wildlife #Earth #resourcemanagement #biologicalscience #Biology

A great educational video from Woodlands North Inc. outlining the important steps required to fix watercourse crossings and restore fish habitat.
In fall 2024, Woodlands was able to collaborate with Kiwetinohk Energy Corp. to replace an undersized culvert with high-velocity waters with a new open-bottom arch. This crossing is located in a DFO special concern watercourse with potential for Arctic Populations of Bull Trout, making it a priority to fix. Kiwetinohk was proactive in wanting to fix this crossing and contribute to restoring fish habitat, and worked with Woodlands to make that a reality. In the end, 57.7km of upstream habitat was reconnected to downstream. To achieve this, we followed the steps below: 1. Isolate work area from fish using layers of mesh fencing both upstream and downstream of the crossing 2. Install a dam to isolate the work area from water. A pump is installed upstream of the dam to move water around the work site and into the downstream 3. Capture all fish now isolated within the work area. Common methods include electroshocking, minnow trapping, seine netting, and dip netting. 4. Excavate and remove the failing crossing. 5. Rebuild the streambed using pit-run, cobble and boulders. 6. Install the new arch crossing 7. Flush the newly constructed channel from sediments. The sediment-laden water is pumped into the terrestrial vegetation to allow for filtration before re-entering the watercourse 8. The dam is slowly removed once the turbidity matches that of the natural upstream. #EnvironmentalConsulting #EnvironmentalConsultant #EnvironmentalServices #EnvironmentalCompliance #Ecology #Sustainability #Alberta #Canada #Conservation #reclamation #Environmental #Environment #nature #EcologicalRestoration #Makingadifference #environmentalscience #YEG #nature #wildlife #Earth #resourcemanagement #biologicalscience #Biology
