A few years ago, we sponsored a student project aimed at making kayaking safer by integrating a modular propelling system onto the kayak. The concept allowed users to deploy the propellers into the water when needed, steering themselves to safety. Advanced features, like an auto-home mode using GPS, were also envisioned. This idea was inspired by news reports of missing kayakers. Although the invention was too costly to commercialize at the time, we still think about it whenever we hear such tragic stories. It makes us wonder: could we have done more to address this issue? One alternative solution could be a handheld propeller that users could easily deploy when needed. Sometimes, issues only become apparent when equipment is deployed in the field. Our role as engineers and designers is to ensure that critical errors are minimized and managed effectively. What constitutes critical errors: A) Safety of the public and workers—Ensuring that our designs prioritize safety to prevent accidents and injuries. B) Equipment retrieval & environmental concerns—Designing with consideration for the ease of equipment recovery and minimizing environmental impact. C) Operational Reliability—Ensuring that equipment functions as intended under real-world conditions to avoid unexpected downtime or failures. D) Cost Efficiency—Balancing design changes to optimize both functionality and cost, preventing costly redesigns or over-engineering. The collaboration between KM3D, Hoskin Scientific Limited, and Canada Water Agency is a prime example of such a scenario.
