On November 21, 2024, the Government of Alberta  unveiled major reforms to the auto insurance system, aiming to address the growing number of claims and a more litigious environment. Beginning in January 2027, the new Care First model will allow drivers to receive compensation directly from their own insurance policies, significantly limiting the ability to sue third parties for pain and suffering. Lawsuits will only be permitted in certain cases, such as those involving criminal convictions.
