Updates

  • As the National Pet Food Bank Grant from Humane Canada comes to a close, we would like to reflect on its significant impact on our No Empty Bowls Pet Food Bank program. Thanks to this support, we have been able to assist people and their pets in rural and Indigenous areas by providing essential pet food during challenging times. During this grant period, we exceeded our goals, helping 1,996 animals and supporting approximately 1,830 families in rural areas. A huge thank you also goes out to our partners from Riley Ranch on the Three Fires, the Dorchester Food Bank, and the Corner Cupboard Food Bank in Aylmer.

  • Old Oak Animal Campus Update! 🐾 💙 As we begin the week we want to provide an update on our upcoming move to our beautiful new facility at 1414 Dundas Street. Over the coming weeks final construction requirements will wrap up and our team will begin our training onsite at Old Oak Animal Campus! As you can imagine, moving to a shelter three times our current size will be a huge adjustment for everyone and we look forward to ensuring the people who care for the animals are feeling comfortable and confident navigating our new space. We anticipate that all current animals in our care will be transported from our current shelter on Clarke Road to Old Oak Animal Campus by our team in late January/early February. During the month of February we anticipate being open by appointment only for adoptions and surrenders at Old Oak Animal Campus. This will allow our team time to adjust to the new facility and ensure all animal care processes are well established and functioning efficiently in our new home. It is our expectation that come early March we will be ready to open our doors to the public for regular public hours. At this time, and until further notice, we continue to operate out of our current location at 624 Clarke Rd. We will continue to provide updates here on social media so please stay tuned. We are so excited to welcome everyone to our new facility and we thank you in advance for your patience during this upcoming transition period.

  • Provide second chances for animals like Lucy! 💙 Lucy, a gentle 4-year-old Siamese cat, was brought to HSLM after a serious eye injury left her in excruciating pain. Despite our best efforts, her left eye couldn’t be saved. Our partner veterinarian performed urgent surgery to remove the damaged eye, ensuring she would no longer suffer. With dedicated post-op care and lots of love, Lucy made an incredible recovery and has since found a warm, loving forever home. Each day animals like Lucy arrive at our shelter requiring urgent care. It is only because of donor support that we are able to continue our lifesaving work. Will you make a gift today? Your generosity helps ensure that animals receive the medical attention, shelter and love they need. Support our Hope for the Holidays campaign this season: https://buff.ly/3ZOSWLZ

  • When you make a gift to HSLM you are offering a second chance at life for animals like Nova. 🐾 Nova, a sweet 7-year-old Lab mix, arrived at HSLM suffering from a severe oral infection that caused her intense pain and prevented her from opening her mouth. After undergoing urgent dental surgery and receiving specialized treatment, her condition has improved significantly. However, Nova has now tested positive for heartworm, meaning her recovery journey is far from over. Make a gift today and provide Hope for the Holidays for animals like Nova. 💙 https://buff.ly/3ZOSWLZ

  • Help animals like Scout this holiday season! When Scout arrived at HSLM he was experiencing extreme ongoing eye infections causing him pain and leaving him blind. After consultation with our partner veterinarian, it was determined that Scout required a double enucleation (eye removal). Thanks to the support of our donors, we were able to proceed with the surgery and support Scout through his recovery. Scout is currently in foster care and will soon be looking for his forever home. To see him wag his tail and be pain-free truly is a special gift for him - and all of us - this holiday season. We simply cannot help animals like Scout without the generosity of our community. Make a gift and help provide Hope for the Holidays for animals in need of critical care like Scout: https://buff.ly/3ZOSWLZ ++ In previous years, the holiday season has brought nearly $100,000 in donations through the mail. With the ongoing Canada Post strike, we are concerned that many of these donations may not reach us in time to make the difference they usually do. Please share this message, consider making a donation and help us overcome the mail delays this holiday season!

  • Help us overcome the mail delays this holiday season! In previous years, the holiday season has brought nearly $100,000 in donations through the mail—critical funds that support the animals in our care. • Happy International Volunteer Day! Today is all about celebrating the incredible volunteers who make so much possible at HSLM. You know that saying, "We couldn’t do it without them"? It’s absolutely true when it comes to our amazing volunteer team. On behalf of our staff and animals, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our 250 dedicated volunteers. Their passion, commitment, and compassion have made a profound impact on the lives of so many animals, offering them the love, care, and hope they deserve each day. We invite everyone to join us in recognizing and celebrating the vital contributions of our volunteers. Whether they’re helping with our pet food bank, assisting with shelter operations, fostering animals, driving animals to appointments, socializing them, or supporting events, every moment of their time matters. Each act of service is a powerful reflection of their dedication to animal welfare and the broader community. Simply put, we couldn’t do it without them.

  • Today is Giving Tuesday and Sawyer and Dallas need your support! This Giving Tuesday we are asking you to make a special donation to support Sawyer and Dallas’ ongoing medical expenses and similar care expenses for over 100 animals in our shelter. Sawyer and Dallas were recently found as strays and required immediate veterinary care. Both dogs had open wounds that had been exposed to the elements for several weeks requiring extensive veterinary care and monitoring. Despite their painful conditions, both dogs were so loving and seemed grateful to receive kindness and help. They recovered well from their wounds and the photos we’ve included showcase their joyful spirits! Unfortunately, like many animals who enter our doors, there are more obstacles to overcome for Sawyer and Dallas and today we ask for your support. Sawyer and Dallas have tested positive for heartworm and require lifesaving treatment. Their treatment and their road to recovery will be lengthy and we are committed to being there each step of the way. Will you help us in offering Sawyer, Dallas and the many other animals in our care the second chance they deserve? Your gift today, no matter the size, truly makes a difference: https://buff.ly/3VI9iUf
