As you complete your plans for 2025, clearly define your marketing needs. Do you need help with content creation? Or do your true needs lie in assistance with your marketing plan? Although content writers work IN marketing and WITH marketing specialists, they offer a different skillset. Marketing specialists help you define your target market and buyer profiles, create an overall marketing strategy, which may involve advertising (e.g., Facebook ads, newspaper ads) and public relations, help you align your marketing to your sales funnel, and monitor your branding. By contrast, content writers take that information and write. For example, clients will ask us to write a series of blog posts aimed at a certain market. Or they might ask us to create social media posts every month for a specific platform and audience. We then work with your marketing team (or marketing specialist) to ensure the voice we write in is the company voice you're expecting and serves your company's purpose. If you don't have your target market defined, and you don't know your sales funnel (or even what one is), then don't hire content writers just yet. Work with marketing specialists to help you decide exactly what you need from content writers. Beginning our series of writing tips over the next couple of weeks, here's our first one. Many writing tools exist, from software for outlining to editing to long-form writing and beyond. If you're reviewing your writing processes for 2025, investigate what writing tools–including analogue ones–can help you accomplish more. Do you like writing the old-fashioned way? Collect paper, pens or pencils, Post-It notes, and other writing materials into one place so they're always available when you need them. Love the clickety-clack of a typewriter? Paper and ink ribbon. (If you reach the end of the ribbon, you can rewind it and use it again.) Prefer a computer? Lots of options exist. Add "software for indie authors" to your search and you'll find myriad reviews on the different writing and editing programs out there. Nothing is more annoying than having a brilliant idea and your method of writing suddenly failing you.
