🗺️ November 3-8: Economic Counsellor Ingrida Darašaitė joined foreign diplomats on an economic mission to Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, organized by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada. 🤝 The mission aimed to strengthen collaboration between #Lithuania and the province in areas such as #innovation, #marine technology, and academic partnerships. During the visit, connections were established with #Newfoundland and #Labrador business associations and innovation hubs. The delegation also gained insights into the province’s oil, mining, and renewable energy sectors. 📝 A highlight of the trip was a visit to Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador, one of the leading research institutions in the Atlantic region. The university is renowned for its globally recognized programs in marine engineering, environmental sciences, technology, and innovation. It hosts advanced laboratories and research centers, including Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, which specializes in marine robotics, ocean monitoring, climate change, and more. 🌊 The group also toured Long Harbour Nickel Processing Plant, gaining insights into sustainable mining technologies, and visited the deep-water Port of Argentia, a strategically significant hub for trade between North America and European markets. The port also plays a key role in the oil and gas sector, serving offshore oil platforms and cargo transport needs. 📊 Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy is largely resource driven. In 2022, the extraction and processing of oil, minerals, fisheries, and forestry resources accounted for approximately 33% of the province’s GDP. The region is also home to some of the best onshore wind resources in North America, offering significant potential for electricity, hydrogen, and ammonia production and export.
