IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT THREATS MADE AGAINST MMAS EVENT McGill University has informed us that a security threat was made targeting the MMAS Homecoming event, which is scheduled for October 26th. As such, the university is moving our event from in-person to fully online as they cannot guarantee security at the event. We deeply regret this turn of events and will continue to follow up with the university to understand the nature and source of this threat. The police has been informed. We believe that this threat was made to disrupt our presence on campus and is an attempt to shut down any discussions on human rights violations, especially those being committed in Palestine, Lebanon and other places in the Middle East. However, this will not deter the MMAS from continuing to advocate for the voices of our alumni membership and showcasing the success and achievements of McGill Muslims in standing up for truth and justice. We hope to see you soon at our next in-person event inshaAllah. In the meantime, please join us in our online Homecoming celebration with Sana Saeed by registering using the link below. Note: if you had already registered and paid for the event, the university will be issuing you a refund as the online event is free. However, registration is mandatory to access the event. URGENT ACTION: McGill’s board of governors tasked the committee on social responsibility (CSSR) to look into whether McGill should divest from weapon companies. As you might be aware, this was one of the major demands of the pro-Palestine campus movement, and it is our chance to voice our support for divestment. McGill students and staff can use the CSSR webform to submit their opinions before October 1st: https://lnkd.in/g-pV_5JR Unfortunately, McGill alumni do not have access to the webform, however you can contact the MMAS at info@mmasociety.org before Sep. 25th to learn how you can convey your opinion with the CSSR. You can learn more about the CSSR and its process for proposing recommendations to the Board of Governors at https://lnkd.in/g_c2NYGu

"The MMAS stands in solidarity with the McGill Muslim Students' Association (MSA) regarding the dismantling of the McGill Encampment for Palestine. MMAS echos the MSA's condemnation of the university's tactics and share their disappointment in McGill's portrayal of these events. The use of police force against unprepared students sets a dangerous precedent for how dissent and activism will be handled on campus in the future. The university's decision to involve law enforcement, especially at such an unreasonable hour, is a stark departure from the principles of dialogue and peaceful resolution that should be upheld in an academic environment. This action not only jeopardizes the safety of students but also threatens to erode the relationship between the administration and its student body, *not to mention it has disrupted campus activity far more than the students in the encampment have in the last few months, directly contradicting one of McGill's stated goals of minimizing disruption. We once again join the call for McGill to reconsider its approach and to engage in meaningful dialogue with its students, following the example of other Canadian universities that have successfully reached peaceful resolutions in similar situations. The safety and right to peaceful protest of all students must be protected and respected."

On June 19th 2024, representatives of MMAS and MSA McGill met with McGill President Deep Saini to discuss the issues we had previously raised with his administration regarding their response to the pro-Palestine protests on campus. As a follow up to the meeting, our latest letter to President Saini offers ideas for helping bring the McGill community to a common ground and to start rebuilding their trust. We hope that these proposals are considered in earnest and to continue discussions to build a safer and more equitable campus for all.
