Medtech Canada has been working hard to address the threat of tariffs on medical technologies and emphasize the impacts they would have on patients and health care systems in both Canada and the U.S. Global News highlighted these potential impacts, as well as the work of our association to try to address them. https://lnkd.in/eMT7k_3k

Patient Engagement Leader | Speaker 🎙️ | Advocate for Health Equity & Diabetes Care 💙 | One Young World Ambassador 🌍

I, like many other Canadians recently, did a deep dive on our fridge and pantry. Our peanut butter is Canadian 🇨🇦 Flour? Proudly from the Prairies 🥯 Potatoes? From PEI 🥔 Salt? From Newfoundland, and very delicious 🧂 And our mugs? From a local maker in BC ☕ But you know what isn’t made in Canada? The insulin pump and the CGM I rely on—not just to stay alive, but to live well. The thought of paying 25% more every month for these essential supplies is devastating. It's an extra cost that hundreds of thousands of people with diabetes simply won’t be able to shoulder. When Medtech Canada seeks exemptions from these tariffs, it’s a reminder that while many of our everyday items support local pride, our healthcare and life-sustaining technologies shouldn’t come with an extra cost burden. Tariffs. They are on the minds of healthcare leaders, and indeed most Canadians. Today, Children's Healthcare Canada was invited to participate in a roundtable hosted by Hon. Mark Holland, PC, MP Health Canada | Santé Canada to discuss the potential impacts of tariffs applied to health products, and/or tariffs impacting the delivery of healthcare services. The conversation was a welcome chance to convene with other health organizations, and to learn more about the federal government's approach to help Canadians weather uncertainty. Here are the messages I shared on behalf of our members, and the families they serve: - Tariffs applied on healthcare products including medical devices, technology and drugs would be devastating for our healthcare systems, and for patients. The Canadian government should do everything possible to avoid this potentially life-threatening outcome. - The weak Canadian dollar is already impacting the purchasing power of healthcare delivery organizations. The application of tariffs would further increase the costs of doing business (food service, equipment purchase, EMR implementation and maintenance, facility renewal, etc) and create measurable opportunity costs, limiting our ability to invest in life-saving research and development, recruit and retain a highly skilled workforce, and right-size health systems for a growing population of children and youth. This is particularly true for members and families in the far north where costs are already significantly higher. - Tariffs may create further disincentives for producers of pediatric drugs and devices to serve a very small Canadian market. This presents a significant equity challenge, increasing the vulnerability of children and youth. - The potential socio-economic impact is significant, as it could worsen mental health issues, contribute to family stress, and increase incidents of abuse or mistreatment of children and youth, similar to the challenges seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal (and provincial) governments have an important role to play to support families and healthcare delivery organizations through these turbulent times. School food programs, CCB support, and GST tax credit can play important mitigating roles for families. For healthcare delivery organizations, governments can play an important role securing a predictable supply chain(s) for critical health products, and explore opportunities to reduce interprovincial trade barriers.
