Some reflections after yesterday’s 6th Value-Based Procuement Conference in Brussels - 1. Strong Benchmarking is required both at baseline and throughout in order to implement a VBP approach 2. Value = both value for $$ but also value to patients. Value-based interventions should at their core advance metrics that matter to patients (less time in hospital, improved outcomes, recovery etc…this is a lesson oft forgotten during procurement focused discussions.(ie. VBP is based on investing in high-value interventions but also disinvestment in low value ones). 3. The European Union is further ahead than Canada in advancing policy frameworks that aim to advance value-based procurement initiatives (not only in health-spending but accross the public sector) (see policy instruments such as Most Economically Advantageous Tender (MEAT) framework or 2014 European Union Directive on public procurement) - BUT, the EU is not a panacea - despite policy advancements there remain precious few concrete examples of VBP projects that have been successfully implemented. 4. 2026 represents a major milestone for the United Kingdom as the Houses of Parliament in the UK have set this date for implementation of VBP as a necessary component of tenders for all public contracts (and this was accomplished through a targeted advocacy campaign to key elected officials) - more on this later but there are lessons for Canada. • Thanks to Jessica Thomson and David Jones of Health Canada for recently providing a technical briefing to the medtech community on Bill C-72, the Connected Care for Canadians Act. The webinar introduced Bill C-72, how it is aiming to improve access to health information in Canada and discussed its implications for patient safety and health care outcomes. Medtech innovators are ever increasingly developing digital health solutions, so this webinar was timely and insightful. Our association is also very supportive of increasing access to Canadian health care data to improve patient outcomes and to enhance the ability of medtech industry to support the needs of the Canadian health care system.

  • Most Canadian medtech companies rely on the U.S. market to help enable the growth of their businesses. We strongly urge Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and provincial leaders from across Canada to work with their counterparts in the U.S. to ensure that tariffs aren’t levied on Canadian medical technology products.

  • Phenomenal news today from our member company Roche Canada and Premier Doug Ford! Kudos to Roche for recognizing the substantial talent and opportunities for investment here, and to the government of Ontario for recognizing the importance of this sector. We're looking forward to seeing the positive impacts of this investment!

I was thrilled to join Roche Canada in Mississauga to announce their $130 million investment in a Global Informatics Hub that will support 250 good-paying jobs over five years. This hub, which is supported by $3.5 million in support from our Invest Ontario Fund, will reinforce Ontario’s position as a leader in life sciences and health-care innovation.

Traditional methods of closing surgical wounds requires follow-up care for dressing changes and removal of staples or sutures – putting an extra burden on both hospital staff and patients. #MohawkMedbuy’s patient-focused approach to procurement allows our Member hospitals to choose products like a novel wound closure system that eliminates those issues and leads to hundreds of fewer clinic visits a year. It also allows patients to shower sooner and, ultimately, remove the dressing themselves.   MMC works closely with Canadian hospitals to drive a resilient #HealthCare #SupplyChain centered on delivering the best possible care.
