Navigating Port Disruptions – MELLOHAWK Logistics is Here to Help! Labor strikes at Canada’s major ports have led to widespread disruptions across North America, stalling billions in trade and impacting essential supply routes on both coasts. West Coast: Vancouver and Prince Rupert: Operations at the key West Coast ports of **#Vancouver** and **#PrinceRupert** have been suspended, affecting $800 million in goods per day. The situation escalated when the **British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA)** locked out over 700 members of **#ILWULocal514** after negotiations stalled. **Rail Congestion Impacting US Exports via Los Angeles/Long Beach Ports** October 18, 2024 We'd like to update our clients on the ongoing rail congestion at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. Recent months have seen a surge in import volumes, leading to significant rail delays. Currently, nearly 50% of containers destined for rail transport from the Port of Los Angeles are experiencing delays of over nine days. This congestion is affecting shipments from major inland hubs like Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, and more. In response, we’re rerouting certain bookings from Los Angeles and Long Beach to alternate ports to minimize disruptions. We are closely monitoring the situation and working with rail and port authorities to mitigate the impact on our operations. Great news on the Rail Strike in Canada. The CIRB confirmed yesterday that the Board has no authority to review or alter the ministerial direction under section 107 of the Code. This means both railways and employees represented by the TCRC are required to resume duties by 12:01 AM EDT on August 26, 2024, and continue operations until the final binding interest arbitration is completed. This is certain a relief for the supply chain industry in Canada. I hope both parties can come to an agreement and please their workers. Wish them well. Additionally, please note the railways statements; " CN On August 23, CN received an order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) imposing binding arbitration between the Company and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) to assist the parties in settling the outstanding terms of their collective agreement. The CIRB has also ordered that no further labour stoppage, including a lockout or strike, can occur during the arbitration process. This means that the strike notice issued on August 23 to CN by the Union is now voided. As communicated yesterday, we remain focused on safely getting your goods moving again, as efficiently as possible. Our recovery plan is underway with updated embargo information shared earlier and uploaded to www.cn.ca/TCRCinfo. **Canadian Pacific Kansas City (TSX: CP) (NYSE: CP) (CPKC) today said it will restart railway operations in Canada by 00:01 ET on Monday, Aug. 26, following the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) order requiring CPKC to resume operations and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) employees to resume their duties. CPKC will fully comply with the CIRB order. As such, CPKC is ending the lockout initiated on Thursday, Aug. 22. CPKC has asked the TCRC for employees to return to work for the day shift on Sunday so that we can get the Canadian economy moving again as quickly as possible and avoid further disruption to supply chains. Our team is executing its restart plan for the safe and orderly resumption of rail service across Canada. We are working with customers on a balanced return to normal operations. CPKC looks forward to welcoming all of our Canadian locomotive engineers, conductors, yardpersons and dispatchers back to work. We are focused on restoring our railway to full strength as we get back to serving our customers and moving Canada’s trade and commerce throughout North America. The CIRB order ends months of unnecessary uncertainty and disruption for the Canadian economy and North American supply chains. We anticipate it will take several weeks for the railway network to fully recover from this work stoppage and a period time beyond that for supply chains to stabilize.
