Ontario on Track to Be an "Energy Superpower" - Includes Priorities for Indigenous Leadership and Participation Ontario Minister of Energy Stephen Lecce just released Ontario’s Affordable Energy Future: The Pressing Case for More Power, a prelude to the province's first-ever Integrated Energy Plan with the goal of Ontario becoming an "Energy Superpower". Ontario is planning for 111 TWh more energy by 2050: the equivalent of four and a half cities of Toronto. Ontario says it will "do this in partnership and consultation with Indigenous communities to ensure that everyone benefits from our energy investments and that we respect Aboriginal and treaty rights... [promoting] Indigenous leadership and participation in energy projects." Priorities for Indigenous leadership and participation are noted: "* Early and meaningful engagement and consultation with Indigenous communities on energy planning and major energy projects is critical to building out our energy system. * Continued capacity funding and support for Indigenous ownership and participation in energy projects is needed, through programs like the provincial Aboriginal Loan Guarantee Program and the recently expanded IESO Indigenous Energy Support Program. * Energy procurements need to incorporate the value of Indigenous leadership and participation by building on existing incentives and engagement requirements. * Ontario must continue to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations and seek regular dialogue on regional and territorial energy interests underpinned by capacity support and relationship agreements. * Indigenous representation is critical to ensuring there are Indigenous voices at the table on provincial energy matters."

The recent revelations of companies falsely claiming Indigenous ownership to secure federal contracts are a wake-up call for the private sector. If the government can fall prey to manipulation, what's stopping the same from happening in Corporate Canada?   The Canadian Council for Indigenous Business has a program to authenticate Indigenous ownership, and more companies need to adopt these checks. Without proper due diligence, we're not just risking reputational damage; we're potentially depriving Indigenous communities of crucial economic opportunities.   In my op-ed for the National Post, I dive into this issue.
