Every year a group of students, ranging in backgrounds and disciplines, from Memorial University of Newfoundland come together to design and build a concrete toboggan, complete with concrete sliding surfaces, a steering and braking system, and a superstructure, to compete in the annual Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race. The 2025 competition will take place in Montréal, Québec!
Our mission is to provide a space for students to show their knowledge of course related work (or knowledge learned outside of the classroom) with many leadership roles and learning opportunities, including public speaking, business literacy, and structural design and manufacturing.
Additionally, all students are given the opportunity to partake in mixing the concrete, building the structure, writing reports, fundraising and speaking to corporate sponsors, as well as travelling to the GNCTR competition to see their hard work in action.
