About us

When the National Gallery of Canada was established in 1880, its collection consisted of a single 19th-century landscape. Nearly 140 years later, the Gallery is home to more than 75,000 works of art, along with extensive library and archival holdings. Comprising works from antiquity to the present day, the Gallery has one of the finest collections of Canadian and Indigenous art in the world, as well as masterworks from numerous other artistic traditions. In addition to showcasing works of art, the Gallery preserves, studies and shares works in every conceivable medium, including photography, sculpture, painting, installation and the decorative arts. It does this through conventional means such as exhibitions and publications, as well as through its website, social media channels and other forms of international outreach. Housed in one of Canada’s most iconic public buildings, the National Gallery of Canada is among the world’s most respected art institutions. As part of its ongoing evolution, and in response to the changing expectations of museum-goers, the Gallery recently renewed its entire narrative on Canadian and Indigenous art, sharing a new and compelling story of artistic production in this country, from time immemorial to the present day.

    A warm welcome to CIMAM to Jean-François Bélisle! "The ongoing strategic plan of the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) places overdue emphasis on the inclusion of diversified voices and position them at the very chore of everything it does. In this context, as the Director and CEO of the NGC, I wish to collaborate with, engage in meaningful discussions and learn from other CIMAM members. The Gallery is at the very beginning of a reflection on how to build more environmentally sound projects across the country. I am hoping to be able to benefit from other CIMAM members’ work in that regard. Overall, I wish to engage positively and constructively with other galleries from around the globe in everything that it does, and I believe CIMAM is a great way of doing this".   • Today is the winter solstice. Moon phases are a vital aspect of Indigenous teachings. In connection to land and place, solstice marks the change of seasons. In Winter's Solstice We light fires in reminder that the darkest days will soon be behind us. In hope of new beginnings with the returning of the sun, we dance. A glimpse to the unveiling of Spring we dream, Of new leaves being turned, seeds being planted. Sharing in the gifts being grown.   • Stan Douglas (Vancouver, British Columbia) appointed to the Order of Canada... move over Ryan Reynolds. The exhibition Stan Douglas: 2011 ≠ 1848 was displayed at the National Gallery of Canada (2023) after a year of international and national acclaim. Thanks to a strategic partnership, the incredible journey, which began as the exhibition marking Stan Douglas’ representation for Canada at the 59th Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia (2022), was followed by a cross-Canada tour with stops at Vancouver’s The Polygon Gallery and Saskatoon’s Remai Modern. https://lnkd.in/gqzRMtYy

  • Barbara Astman belongs to a visionary group of artists who have continued to radicalize visual culture since the early 1970s by defining new ways of seeing. For over four decades, Barbara has explored a wide range of photo-based media and produced work that has received national and international recognition. As a Professor Emerita at OCAD University, in Toronto, she has been instrumental in inspiring generations of emerging artists.
