WoodWorks and the BC Office of Mass Timber Implementation held a 30-minute webinar earlier this year focusing on new provincial mass timber building code provisions. Topics covered by Cameron McDonald and Derek Ratzlaff included the introduction of the new 18-storey limit, changes for occupancies, and new construction requirements. 🚧 The Hive at 2150 Keith Drive, Vancouver has recently celebrated topping-off, bringing one of the most seismically advanced mass timber projects in North America to life. This 10-storey office development, rising to 45 metres, features nine levels of mass timber construction above a concrete base and a striking honeycomb façade of diagonal glulam braces. Key highlights: 🔹Sustainable design: Mass timber interiors, complemented by earth tones and expansive glazing. 🔹Fire safety: Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels and glulam beams engineered for a two-hour fire resistance rating. 🔹Seismic design: Diagonal braces create a cellular pattern on all elevations. A series of timber shear walls in the interior and a series of structural braces at the exterior resist the wind and seismic load. 🔹Outdoor space: Balconies between braces and a rooftop deck with urban agriculture and panoramic views. The Hive is pushing the boundaries of sustainable, safe, and innovative design in office space. Stay turned for more updates as this project progresses! One of the Mass Timber Demonstration Program projects, Marpole Community Centre, has broken ground and is set to complete in 2026. This low–carbon, high–performance facility, is set to meet Passive House certification, targets LEED Gold, and a 40 per cent reduction in embodied carbon below the 2018 baseline to comply with the City of Vancouver’s mandate. Learn more about the project: https://lnkd.in/echzavuP #MTDP #MassTimber #CommunityCentre
The new Marpole Community Centre in South Vancouver is well underway, with the installation of the long-span steel beams for the doubly curved cantilever roof currently ongoing. This facility is set to replace an outdated structure with a new two-story building that is almost double the size. Throughout the design phase, close collaboration between the design team and contractors was essential to confirm that the intended curvature was achievable within the structural elements. The gravity system - which largely utilizes timber as the key structural component - incorporates cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels supported by glulam beams and columns to create the floors and terraces, while the curved roof combines steel beams with CLT panels. To provide lateral stability, light-wood shear walls have been placed within the architectural partitions to minimally disrupt the interior space whilst upholding structural strength. Vienna House showcases mass timber as a solution to help alleviate the current shortage of affordable housing. This seven-storey, residential building will have 123 units ranging from studios to four bedrooms, accommodating a demographically diverse range of residents including low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities. It is designed as a mass timber and light-frame wood hybrid structure, making it an efficient and replicable typology. The main structural building system includes cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof and floors and light-frame wood closed envelope panels. Exploring "Biophilic design with wood in British Columbia" by Bill Browning 🌲 We are excited to announce the release of a new publication by Bill Browning of Terrapin Bright Green: "Biophilic design with wood in British Columbia." This insightful exploration delves into how wood is used to create connections between people and nature in the architectural landscape of British Columbia (B.C.). What is Biophilia? 🤔 Biophilia is our innate affinity for nature—a phenomenon supported by research showing that natural elements can positively impact our physiology and psychology. Evidence suggests that incorporating biophilic design strategies, like integrating natural views or elements, can reduce stress, enhance cognitive function, elevate mood, and increase preference for spaces. For example, studies have shown that hospital patients with views of nature experience better healing outcomes. Wood and biophilic design 🌳 Throughout history, wood has been a central material in construction, cherished for its natural qualities. In B.C., wood has played a vital role in traditional architecture, from the conical pit houses of the First Nations interior to the grand longhouses of the coastal regions, constructed with western red cedar. These traditional uses of wood continue to inspire contemporary designs. In this publication, Bill Browning: · Examines B.C.’s rich history and cultural ties to wood as a building material. · Defines the 15 patterns of biophilic design, focusing on how wood effectively embodies eight of these patterns. · Provides case studies showcasing how wood contributes to biophilic design. · Offers key considerations for integrating wood into biophilic buildings to enhance well-being and productivity. By bringing the benefits of nature indoors through wood, biophilic design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of spaces but also promotes mental and physical health.
